Samsung’s internal tests seemingly revealed that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 suffered from overheating issues, causing sustained performance to drop significantly, though no results were shared from the original report. Amidst the controversy, Qualcomm’s Chief Marketing Officer, Don McGuire, has come out with a clarification, stating that the claims are false, but his latest post raises more questions than answers.
New post on X only mentions the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, not the flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6
Don McGuire immediately came to the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6’s defense and mentioned in a reply to Jason C. on X that “OEMs are consistently tuning their platforms as they launch their products.” While Qualcomm’s marketing head could be referring to Samsung’s internal tests letting the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 run at its maximum power limit, resulting in thermal throttling, he doesn’t specifically state the exact name of the chipset in his post.
Instead, he mentions the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, omitting the “Extreme” moniker, which obviously sends the wrong message about Qualcomm’s flagship SoC. Even though there are a ton of similarities between the 2nm SoCs, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 can be tuned to reach its advertised clock speeds of 5.00GHz by reaching a higher power limit. To help with sustained performance, Qualcomm has not just switched to TSMC’s 2nm, but has also adopted an “Offset PoP” packaging.
For those who are unfamiliar, Offset PoP places a heatsink on top of the DRAM die, moving it slightly away from the silicon rather than placing it directly on top, helping with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6’s sustained performance. In an earlier test, it takes a reference design smartphone 15 minutes to reach the maximum temperature threshold, thanks to the improved packaging, making it over twice as long compared to devices equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.
In our previous report, we noted that because the claims originated from a South Korean outlet, it’s possible that undermining the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 could be part of a broader campaign to paint Samsung and its Exynos 2700 in a positive light. After all, the company’s own 2nm flagship is expected to be announced before 2026 ends, and there’s no better opportunity than right now to maintain this hype.
As part of our due diligence, we’ve responded to Don McGuire’s post on X, asking whether he’s referring to the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 or the regular Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. When we have more details, we’ll relay all relevant information to our readers, so stay tuned.
