AMD has introduced its latest Agentic AI rack-scale solution called Helion, which comes in a CPU-only configuration with up to 32K "Zen 6" cores.
AMD's Helion Rack Scale Solution Gives Customers The Choice Between All-CPU and a CPU+GPU Configuration
At OCP 2026, AMD is announcing a brand new rack scale solution designed to meet the compute demands of Agentic AI workflows. The company states that this new rack is designed as an open blueprint for Agentic AI and is called "Helion".
The AMD Helion AI rack takes the same open-platform approach as the company's flagship Helios rack, which combines EPYC 9006 "Zen 6" CPUs with Instinct MI400 "CDNA 5" GPUs. Helion enables customers to match CPU performance, core density, and power with GPU acceleration, based on their needs.
“Agentic AI is not a single workload. It spans personal agents, enterprise applications, code execution and complex workflows, each with different compute requirements,” said Dan McNamara, senior vice president and general manager, Compute and Enterprise AI, AMD. “To do that takes optimized compute and infrastructure that can adapt to different workloads. With AMD Helion, we are bringing AMD EPYC performance, open software and flexible rack designs together so our partners can build systems around customer needs and make efficient use of available power.”
So, as mentioned above, there are two configurations in which the Helion AI rack can be made. The first is a CPU-only solution that will be powered by up to 32,768 cores based on the Zen 6 core architecture. The AMD EPYC 9006 "Venice" lineup features up to 256 "Zen 6C" cores, so that amounts to 128 chips if the flagship configuration is used. The CPU-only track is designed for hyper-scale customers.
The second option is an all-in-one rack that combines the same AMD EPYC "Venice" CPUs, albeit a smaller figure, with AMD Instinct MI350P GPU nodes in a general-purpose compute environment. This specific configuration is designed to provide enterprise-tier agentic AI performance.
- A CPU-only rack powered by 6th Gen AMD EPYC processors that can support up to 32,768 CPU cores. This rack is designed for hyperscale customers, providing dedicated capacity for agent execution and connections to separate model inference infrastructure.
- An all-in-one rack that combines AMD EPYC CPU nodes, AMD Instinct MI350P GPU nodes, and general-purpose compute on one platform. This rack is designed to provide partners and customers with an all-in-one concept for enterprise agentic AI.
AMD's Helion racks will be fine-tuned for the latest AI capabilities, and partners can additionally tailor the CPU and GPU configurations to customer workloads to match agent execution, model inference, and support compute to each deployment's performance, power & cost requirements.
The Helion rack will be contributed to OCP, which will enable its availability to the community for further development, deployment, and adoption. The first configurations of the Helion rack will be ready by November 2026, while broader availability is planned for the first half of 2027.
AMD Helion delivers an open, flexible blueprint that lets organizations match compute, power, and performance precisely to the diverse demands of agentic AI, whether through high-density CPU racks for hyperscale agent execution or integrated CPU-GPU systems for enterprise deployments. By combining AMD EPYC and Instinct technology with an OCP-based design, open software, and broad ecosystem support, it turns existing infrastructure investments into a scalable foundation for the next wave of intelligent workloads.
