Nvidia’s Equity Investments Consume Half Its Free Cash Flow. Can the Payout Pace Last?

Nvidia passed our low-debt and strong-cash-flow screen. See the other businesses that cleared those financial hurdles alongside it. The chip business generates substantial cash, but shareholders also need to account for money invested in other companies. That spending sits outside the usual free-cash-flow calculation and can change how much remains for capital returns.
NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) reported August 26 that second-quarter revenue reached $96.2 billion, up 106% year over year. Paid demand for its computing infrastructure supports the AI investment case. The narrower question is whether cash from that business covers both ecosystem investments and shareholder distributions.
The investment bill sits below free cash flow
Over the first half of fiscal 2027, operating cash flow was $74.421 billion. Subtracting $4.434 billion of equipment and intangible-asset purchases plus $92 million of related principal payments leaves $69.895 billion of company-defined free cash flow. That is a useful cash measure, but it leaves out $42.404 billion spent purchasing equity securities. Sales of equity securities brought in $7.241 billion, making the net investment outflow $35.163 billion.
After that net investment spending, the same operating-cash base leaves $34.732 billion. Nvidia paid $39.044 billion for repurchases and $6.290 billion in dividends, a combined $45.334 billion. Net equity purchases consumed 50.3% of free cash flow. The resulting $10.602 billion gap required other funding on this narrow calculation. Debt issuance supplied $24.896 billion of cash; existing liquidity and other cash movements also matter. Our Check Point analysis examines when strong liquidity and a buyback program depend on financing beyond cash produced by the business.
This bridge includes actual cash paid, not the entire value of Nvidia's investment portfolio. It also leaves acquisitions, employee-tax payments and other uses outside the calculation. The $99 billion equity-investment balance at July 26 measures an asset position; it is not a bill payable again next quarter.
Nvidia also disclosed $25 billion of equity-investment commitments at July 26. Its August data-center guarantees carry a conditional aggregate cap of $105 billion, with exposure beginning as facilities enter service, expected from fiscal 2029. Those future and contingent amounts belong outside the current cash bridge. Our earlier portfolio analysis follows the investment risks linking Nvidia, Intel and CoreWeave.
