반도체 ETF(나스닥: SMH)인 밴넥 반도체 ETF(VanEck Semiconductor ETF)에 50만 달러를 투자했다고 상상해 보세요.

You Bought a Semiconductor Fund. On $500,000, $87,743 of It Is NVIDIA A single semiconductor ETF sounds like a spread bet across dozens of chip companies, but the math inside one popular fund tells a very different story about where your money actually lands. Picture a $500,000 position in the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:SMH). The fund’s SEC portfolio holdings filing dated June 30, 2026 shows NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA | NVDA Price Prediction) at 17.55% of the fund. At that weight, approximately $87,743 of your money is tied to one company. That is a large stake in a single company for most portfolios. The runner-up, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE:TSM), held 9.29%, or roughly $46,445. NVIDIA’s piece is about double the next largest position. One Company Leads a Fund Holding Just 25 Stocks The same filing lists only 25 equity positions. The five largest made up 43.88% of the fund combined, or $219,401 of a $500,000 position. Behind NVIDIA and Taiwan Semiconductor come Advanced Micro Devices, Applied Materials, Micron Technology, KLA, Lam Research, Broadcom, Intel, and ASML. Each held between 5% and 6% of net assets. Keep the date in mind. These weights come from a quarter-end several months back, but weights in this sector move quickly and NVIDIA’s share of the fund today could be significantly different. You Chose Chips. Did You Choose This Much NVIDIA? A broad index fund ends up concentrated in a few names by accident. Weighting by company size drives the giants to the top. An SMH buyer made a deliberate choice to own the semiconductor sector, and that choice deserves credit. The overlooked decision is sizing. Did you mean for nearly a fifth of this position to depend on one company’s results? Could you see yourself writing an $87,743 check to NVIDIA? Geography is the second blind spot. SMH trades on a US exchange, yet its second largest holding is based in Taiwan. ASML, at 5.04%, is based in the Netherlands, and several smaller positions are also based outside the United States. If you read “US listed” as “US companies,” your holdings include manufacturing and supply chains clustered in particular parts of the world. Concentration Has Rewarded Holders So Far Concentration in a sector fund is expected. A fund that weights chipmakers by size will be led by the largest one. That structure has paid off. SMH’s adjusted price rose 1,815.17% over the ten years through October 12, 2026, while NVIDIA gained 13,856.12% over the same stretch. The problem lies in not knowing how large the single-stock position inside a fund that feels diversified really is. An Alternative With Flatter Weights The SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF (NYSEARCA:XSD) gives each holding a similar weight. Its June 30, 2026 filing put NVIDIA at 2.1% of net assets. Equal weighting leans toward smaller, more volatile chip companies, and XSD managed $3.48 billion in net assets, compared with SMH’s $77.2 billion. Look up each fund’s expense ratio on its issuer fact sheet before comparing total costs. Add Up Your True NVIDIA Exposure Across Every Account Owning NVIDIA shares directly, or holding an S&P 500 or total market fund alongside SMH, gives you more NVIDIA than any single statement shows. To find the total, take each fund’s balance and multiply it by that fund’s current NVIDIA weight. Then add the value of any shares you hold directly. Do this for every account: IRA, 401(k), taxable brokerage, and any spouse’s accounts. VanEck posts SMH’s current holdings and weights on its fund page at vaneck.com. Each fund’s quarterly portfolio filings (Form N-PORT) are free on the SEC’s EDGAR database. Use the current figures there, not the June snapshot above. SMH suits a certain kind of investor. That investor wants a large-cap chip allocation led by the industry’s biggest names and accepts that NVIDIA will drive much of the result. It fits poorly for such a retiree who already owns NVIDIA, directly or through a broad index fund, and bought SMH expecting to spread risk across the sector. If you add up every account, how much of your retirement depends on one chipmaker? Contact [email protected] for any questions or corrections.
