(English)
Micron Technology Inc. (NASDAQ:MU) is a company that sits at the center of an extraordinary demand cycle. With strong margins, exceptional returns and a healthy balance sheet, the investor attention now turns to business durability. The company's forward earnings multiple of 7.02x looks cheap based only on the assumption that the memory demand has structurally jumped higher. However, if this is just another peak for a highly cyclical industry, the multiple could prove to be a warning signal from the market. With Micron's cyclical track record, any signs of a slowdown in growth, pricing softness, or capacity overbuild could trigger a sharp volatility in the share price. Micron ranked #2 in our recent list of 10 High Beta Stocks With Strong Revenue Growth. But which name ranked higher? Photo by Slejven Djurakovic on Unsplash Is AI Rewriting the Script for Micron? Micron traded at $1,029 on October 9 closing, which takes the company's market capitalization to $1.21 trillion. The stock has gained 260.53% so far in 2026, and a whopping 433.8% over the last 52 weeks. This compares with the broader S&P 500's 17.38% increase during the stated period. Micron is clearly one of the beneficiaries of the existing shortages across the memory chip market. In fact, a large part of the bullish argument for the stock hinges on the sustainability of demand for memory chip products and the continuation of AI buildout. Its long-term supply agreements offer high demand visibility to investors, as the company has transformed itself through its multi-year Strategic Customer Agreements (SCAs). The company anticipates that such agreements will make up for around 35% of the overall topline through 2030. Management believes that share could eventually reach approximately 50%. Micron's largely contracted 2027 HBM supply adds to the bullish narrative around the stock. Will the company witness an AI memory supercycle beyond 2026? Elite Margins, Elite Returns Its profitability is equally striking, as the company has been yielding margins which are normally associated more with a software or royalty business, not a semiconductor manufacturer. Micron reported a fiscal 2026 GAAP operating margin of 74.6% and a net profit margin of approximately 63.8%. Micron is reputed for having a fortress balance sheet for a highly capital-intensive business, as its 3.74% debt-to-equity ratio is as low as it can get. The company has just $5.18 billion in debt, while holding a cash and short-term investments totaling $43.43 billion. Hence, management has sufficient cushion at its disposal to finance its expansion plans, payout dividends, executed buybacks, or even ride out a downturn. With strong capabilities in DRAM, HBM, and NAND, Micron captures demand across both storage and accelerator memory markets. Where does it position the company within the existing landscape of constrained memory supply?
