NVIDIA’s flagship Blackwell Ultra B300 has continued to find a place in Chinese infrastructure after an investigation by security firm Lava revealed that 32 of these high-performance units were operating inside the network of China Telecom, a state-owned telecommunications giant. The report concludes that, despite the U.S. export controls in place, these GPUs are still finding a way onto Chinese soil, albeit through illegal means. Still, when there’s a trade ban in place, smuggling is the only alternative available to obtain NVIDIA’s latest AI hardware.
The restricted GPUs were remotely located, but NVIDIA doesn’t appear to be concerned, stating that it’s “a drop in the bucket”
Due to U.S. export controls, Chinese technology giants like ByteDance, Alibaba, and Tencent have been relying on GPUs like RTX PRO 5500 for AI inference, but it’s obvious that these graphics chips are inferior to the likes of the B300. However, what’s interesting is how China Telecom got a hold of NVIDIA’s Blackwell Ultra range, with The Information reporting that Israeli security firm Lava identified the restricted processors remotely via NVIDIA’s Data Center GPU Manager (DCGM) Exporter tool.
Data center operators install this software for internal server health diagnostics, but the tool was accessible over the open internet without password protection. Though the software confirmed the existence of 32 B300 units operating on China Telecom’s network, their exact physical location couldn’t be determined. There’s no question why the trade ban is imposed on hardware like the B300 because with its 288GB of HBM3E memory across eight 12-high stacks, plus a memory bandwidth of 8TB/s on an 8,192-bit interface, it’s the most powerful AI acceleration architecture.
Able to handle demanding tasks like reasoning-based large language models, the B300 offers up to 50 percent higher memory and FP4 compute capabilities compared to previous generations. These performance gains and other attributes are exactly why the chip is subject to tight distribution restrictions. Under U.S. export policies, vendors can only sell B300 GPUs to whitelisted customers who commit to preventing diverted sales to embargoed parties. As you can see, despite trade barriers, illicit networks continue to move cutting-edge hardware into Chinese data centers, but NVIDIA doesn’t appear to be too bothered.
A company spokesperson told Tom’s Hardware that smuggled NVIDIA GPUs are “a drop in the bucket” compared to what China already possesses. In fact, the graphics chip manufacturer stated that diverted U.S. products make up less than 0.5 percent of deployed inventory. Still, if these 32 units were found inside China Telecom, who’s to say that more B300s won’t be found in other state-backed institutions?
