Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan believes that China is not significantly behind the US when it comes to chip manufacturing prowess. The CEO made the remarks in an interview with Nikkei Asia, where he also discussed Intel's restructuring efforts and attempts to establish a foundry business that is on par with Taiwan's TSMC, which is the world's largest contract chip manufacturer.
Intel CEO Tan Asserts Foundry Business Can Become A Growth Driver But Stresses Patience To Do It Right
China's relationship with the US when it comes to chip manufacturing technology is the source of considerable attention. Multiple high-profile names, including Elon Musk and the head of Zeiss' semiconductor business, have shared their opinions on the matter. Musk has gone as far as to claim that China could overcome manufacturing limitations as soon as in two to three years.
On the other hand, the CEO of Zeiss's semiconductor business, believes that a 15-year lag was reasonable when it came to the latest extreme ultraviolet chip manufacturing technology.
Now, Intel's CEO Lip-Bu Tan, who is one of the most experienced executives in the industry, has shared his take on the matter. Tan was asked about the landscape of the semiconductor business in the US and China in light of the US sanctions that have prevented Chinese firms from acquiring the latest EUV machines.
In response, the Intel CEO outlined that all companies, whether they are from China or the US, have different strengths and weaknesses. Continuing with his emphasis on customer requirements being paramount for any company, Tan added that products that are the best for enterprise and for customers will end up determining who succeeds.
The Intel CEO was then asked about whether China could catch up to the US when it came to advanced chip manufacturing in five to ten years. Restrictions on China being unable to procure EUV lithography machines have made it so that the country is unable to shrink its chip circuits to improve performance and power similarly to chips made by TSMC and by Intel.
Tan's response was rather brief, as he simply commented that: "Today, I think it's not that far behind."
Chinese Firm Launda's EUV Source Boasting A 100 Hour Runtime Might Be Key Breakthrough
Tan's latest thoughts came soon after China's Landau unveiled its first EUV source prototype. The light source claims to have a runtime of 100 hours with an output of 15W. ASML's first EUV lithography machine capable of high-volume manufacturing (HVM) was the NXE:3400B, which was shipped with 150W power sources and the potential to upgrade these to 250W.
The 250W figure is important since it enabled the machines to compete on a cost and scale basis with the DUV immersion lithography systems. However, the key impressive point, as noted by a semiconductor insider, is the run time.
As EUV light sources require hitting tin droplets with carbon dioxide gas a hundred thousand times each second, running it for 24 hours is so complex that ASML redefined EUV lithography scanners' runtime definition to exclude the source's runtime.
