AMD has showcased its next-gen EPYC Verano CPUs for the first time at OCP, which will accelerate its AI goals further by leveraging LPDDR5X memory. AMD EPYC Verano CPUs Combine Zen 6 Cores With LPDDR5X Memory For Enhanced Agentic AI Capabilities While Zen 6 EPYC CPUs are already out in the form of the Venice "9006" chips, there are other configurations planned through 2026-2027 such as Venice-X, Venice-HF, and Verano. Verano is going to be tailor-made for Agentic AI workloads as it has a few tricks that AMD has adopted for the first time. To start, AMD EPYC Verano CPUs are built on the same Zen 6 core architecture and are part of the EPYC 9006 "LP" family. Initially, AMD mentioned up to 72 cores for this AI-host-optimized chip, and that was on a 1P platform. Now, AMD states up to 192 cores for its Verano chips, which could either be a single chip or a dual 96-core setup. The chip also features up to 112 Gbps xGMI connectivity speeds to feed Instinct MI500 GPUs in next-gen AI racks for Agentic workloads. AMD's EPYC Verano CPUs will be the first to support SOCAMM2 memory. SOCAMM2 is a relatively new memory form factor that currently harnesses LPDDR5X DRAM modules and offers high bandwidth, high capacity, and much better power efficiency in a compact form factor. This allows tech vendors to ensure maximum memory density. Verano "LP" CPUs will be configured on the SP8 platform. The chip shown during the event featured eight Zen 6 CCDs with two large IO dies, and four LP5X memory controllers on the outskirts. Compared to the EPYC Venice "Zen 6C" chip, the CCDs look a bit small, which means these could be the standard 12-core "Zen 6" dies instead of the denser 32-core "Zen 6C" variants. AMD CEO and Chair Lisa Su displays a 6th Gen EPYC "Verano" data center CPU during the opening keynote of the 2026 OCP Global Summit in San Jose, California. "Verano," the first AMD EPYC CPU with an LPDDR memory interface will be available in 2027. During her presentation on Monday, Oct. 12, 2026, she illustrated how AMD's portfolio of open, full-stack infrastructure delivers the computing power to support agentic AI at every scale. (Credit: OCP) During the keynote, Dr. Lisa Su said that the 6th Gen EPYC Verano CPUs are "the next step in AMD's CPU roadmap for the AI era". It is clear that AMD is gunning for multiple solutions in the AI market. The competition is heating up with NVIDIA, Intel, Qualcomm, Arm, and multiple others rolling out their own Agentic AI-optimized chips. Like AMD, NVIDIA's next-gen Vera Rubin and Vera CPX platforms also feature SOCAMM2 LPDDR5X memory. And LPDDR is also the prime choice of several upcoming AI accelerators, such as Tesla's A15, which was recently revealed, and several Intel inference-optimized GPU solutions. Lisa Su also pointed out that the server CPU demand is expected to grow by 50% by 2030, hitting $200B. Given the success and heights achieved with EPYC, these next-gen Zen 6 and upcoming Zen 7/Zen 8 lineups could capture a big chunk of that market share, given AMD's solidifying CPU position over recent years.
