NVIDIA's latest DLSS 5 Neural Rendering model has officially arrived, bringing substantial performance improvements over its predecessor. Although the updated model is currently only available through NBA 2K27, PC modders have already managed to get it running in officially unsupported games and hardware, with early community testing showing frame rate improvements of up to 40%.
As spotted by Renan Maniero on X, the latest NBA 2K27 update includes a new DLSS Neural Rendering DLL (nvngx_dlssnr.dll), version 310.9.16.0, replacing the previous 310.8.x releases.
The new model incorporates the optimizations NVIDIA announced earlier this week, including a 24% reduction in model size, 20% lower VRAM consumption at 4K, and up to 2x faster Neural Rendering processing. NVIDIA claims these improvements can translate into up to 40% higher frame rates in NBA 2K27, with comparable visual fidelity. Naturally, the modding community wasted little time putting these claims to the test.
X user Gaming Optimized compared the previous and updated Neural Rendering models using identical settings in Forza Horizon 6 on their RTX 4060 system, including 100% intensity and model resolution. The results showed nearly 40% higher performance with the new model, without immediately noticeable image-quality compromises. A second comparison, this time in Resident Evil Requiem, demonstrated a similarly impressive 30% performance improvement.
Meanwhile, Detro tested the updated model on an RTX 4080 SUPER-powered PC at 4K with Path Tracing, DLSS Super Resolution Performance, and 4x modded Multi Frame Generation. Frame rates increased from 108 FPS to 150 FPS, representing a 39% improvement. The tester also observed softer colors and a less aggressive Neural Rendering effect compared to the previous version.
What's particularly interesting is that these results were obtained through unofficial implementations rather than native game integrations. The experimental OptiScaler-DLSSNR-PreSR-Multipass fork allows users to inject DLSS 5 Neural Rendering into supported games that lack official integration, with community-modified runtimes extending compatibility to older RTX generations.
According to Maniero, the updated DLL also introduces two Neural Rendering presets: Preset A, corresponding to the previous model, and Preset B, which uses the newer optimized model and is selected by default. These shouldn't be confused with the separate DLSS Frame Generation presets.
Of course, these remain preliminary community tests, and visual differences, compatibility issues, and performance variations are still possible. Nevertheless, the early results are extremely encouraging, particularly considering that DLSS 5's substantial performance overhead has been one of its biggest drawbacks since its introduction.
With the new model already producing impressive results on officially unsupported games and GPUs, NVIDIA's Neural Rendering technology is becoming considerably more practical for PC gamers.
