The incident does not appear to be of a geopolitical nature, but does hammer home the critical importance that Intel accords its Fab 38, which features its only available empty clean room for chip fabrication at the moment
Intel's Fab 38 in Kiryat-Gat, Israel, has experienced an explosion and fire, with emergency crews investigating the possible involvement of hazardous materials
Israel's Fire and Rescue Services have confirmed that they received an incident report at 14:12 local time about an explosion and fire at Intel's Fab 38 in Kiryat-Gat.
Subsequently, as many as 8 firefighting and rescue teams, including specialized hazardous materials units, were deployed to search for trapped workers and contain the fire.
As of the last available reports, three workers have been hospitalized for serious injuries, including one who is in a critical condition.
The authorities suspect that a gas cylinder containing nitrogen trifluoride (NF₃) - a specialty gas used in semiconductor processing - might have been the precursor to this incident.
As we noted earlier, the Fab 38 contains Intel's only clean room that is almost ready for utility hookup and tooling. Back in July 2025, Intel had paused the broader work on its Fab 38, tasking Hoffman Construction to focus on completing the structure for just one of the two planned clean rooms. Well, fast forward just a little over a year, and Hoffman is nearly done with its contractual obligations related to the first clean room and has updated its Fab 38 page to show "2026" as the year of completion.
Once completed, Fab 38 will add "over 600,000 square feet of cleanroom and house tools capable of delivering EUV-based process nodes" to Intel's proverbial armory, as per a disclosure by Hoffman.
