All memory manufacturers might be enjoying a profit surge, but none of them are equal when it comes to charging their lucrative customers, which, in this case, are data centers. In fact, the ability of companies like Samsung, Micron, SK hynix, and CXMT to charge more solely depends on how reliable they are in fulfilling shipments. According to an interview, the Korean giant is estimated to charge up to 25 percent more than its rivals, because it can back up its claims of a steady supply.
Samsung is estimated to charge $4.50 for its HBM, with its HBM4 technology reportedly priced at 3x the quote of HBM3E
A post caught our eye because it mentions that not all DRAM manufacturers are the same when it comes to charging their data center customers. The post mentions an “expert interview,” and while we couldn’t get a hold of that, the HBM pricing metrics caught our eye. Apparently, Samsung is the most expensive compared to the big three, which include Micron and SK hynix, charging $4.50, making the company’s quote up to 25 percent higher.
In comparison, Micron is estimated to charge $4, while SK hynix has set a quote at $3.60-$3.80. In short, premium data centers need to pay Samsung, which may be related not only to the manufacturer’s technological prowess but also to securing a steady supply. However, the post doesn’t mention which HBM variant the $4.50 quote is being taken from, but we previously reported that its HBM4 is priced in the mid-to-high $4 range, making it three times the quote Samsung charged for HBM3E.
The biggest advantage Samsung has over Micron and SK hynix is access to its foundry, along with further efforts to stabilize HBM4 yields. A previous estimate mentioned that the Korean giant achieved 80 percent yields for HBM4, whereas manufacturing complexities for Micron have forced it to continue milking DRAM orders. Still, the latter is said to generate gross margins of 95 percent in 2027, so this approach is clearly working for the manufacturer.
With Samsung possessing multiple advanced nodes at its disposal, its 4nm process is mature enough to handle HBM4 production with reduced defects, allowing it to free up resources, which have gone toward cutting-edge 2nm 5G modem development, increasing utilization, and setting up an incredible position to lure in customers like Qualcomm. In short, Samsung’s stacked approach for non-memory and memory businesses gives it multiple layers of advantage over Micron and SK hynix, hence the premium data centers have to pay.
