AMD & Intel have expanded their ongoing EAG collaboration by bringing simplified AI development on x86 CPUs using PyTorch.
AMD Brings its ZenDNN Optimizations To oneDNN As A One-Stop Shop To Simplify Development on x86 CPUs Using PyTorch Alongside Intel
Ever since the formation of the EAG, or the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group, Intel and AMD have been working closely to advance the x86 segment through deeper collaborations that bring CPU optimizations and various improvements to both camps.
Today, as an expansion of this collaboration and following a recommendation by the x86 EAG, both Intel & AMD have come together to make oneDNN the default open-source library for x86 acceleration within PyTorch.
With this announcement, AMD will bring its full range of ZenDNN optimizations under oneDNN, and has also joined the UXL Foundation as a Steering Member to further advance this work.
This is a big step towards a simplified approach to x86 CPUs, as it will enable AI workloads to run more efficiently on chips from both camps, and also reduce fragmentation in the x86 ecosystem. Furthermore, the oneDNN framework will enable easier development of PyTorch applications.
“Developers shouldn’t have to think about separate software paths to get the best from an x86 CPU. Working with AMD through oneDNN gives the PyTorch community a consistent approach for modern processors and a way to bring future capabilities, including AI Compute Extensions, into the framework.”
— Jeff McVeigh, vice president and general manager, Data Center Strategic Programs, Intel
“AMD is advancing an open software ecosystem that gives developers greater choice and makes it easier to build high-performance AI applications. By working with the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group, we’re bringing the industry together around common technologies that simplify development across x86 processors."
— Robert Hormuth, corporate vice president, Architecture and Strategy, AMD
“Open source innovation thrives when the developer and operational experience is seamless and unified. AMD and Intel coming together to standardize x86 CPU optimizations through oneDNN in PyTorch is a major step forward in eliminating ecosystem fragmentation. As a member of the PyTorch community, Red Hat is excited to see this level of open collaboration, which will make it significantly easier for developers to build, optimize, and deploy AI workloads consistently across x86 architectures.”
— Stephen Watt, vice president, Office of the Chief Technology Officer, and distinguished engineer, Red Hat; PyTorch ambassador
By aligning around a common foundation, AMD and Intel are removing a long-standing source of friction for developers. The result is a smoother path for building and deploying AI on x86, with less time spent on vendor-specific workarounds and more focus on the applications themselves. This kind of cooperation strengthens the overall ecosystem and gives organizations greater flexibility as they scale their AI workloads.
