When some of the smartest and most well-connected people on the planet are saying the same thing, quite literally so, you should sit up and pay attention. And, the useful life of a GPU is one such 'great unifier,' with NVIDIA's Jensen Huang, SpaceX's Elon Musk, and Gavin Baker - widely regarded as one of the most knowledgeable public investors on the semiconductor supply chain - all echoing the same basic paradigm: GPUs are no longer depreciating in value.
NVIDIA's Jensen Huang, Elon Musk, and one of the most knowledgeable public investors on the semiconductor supply chain all agree: GPUs are no longer a depreciating asset
First, Elon Musk gave a very elegant explanation as to why GPUs are no longer depreciating on SpaceX's Q3 2026 earnings call this week, noting that as AI models continue to improve, they are able to deliver a much higher 'useful intelligence per watt':
"Our belief is that the value of compute per watt will increase over time, not decrease. And the reason for that, I think it should be obvious to people really, is that as you improve the AI software, as the models get better and better, they’re able to, you get more useful intelligence per watt. And the value of that compute is proportionate to the useful intelligence per watt. And that’s why you see things like even old computers like H100s renting for more than they rented when they were new."
Then, NVIDIA's Jensen Huang picked up the proverbial torch at today's GTC Berlin, noting that the useful life of a given GPU is 8 years or more these days:
"Well, this is one of our advantages because NVIDIA’s computing systems are so universally used. And the performance is so good that it’s productive for so long. And because we’re software programmable and we keep enhancing the software throughout the entire life of the asset, we keep refreshing it so that it’s productive for a very long time."
"And so people are discovering that what people thought used to be a four-year lifecycle really is probably eight to maybe more. And irrespective of the clients, the customers that use the compute, they’re always companies that can use the compute. And so there’s just so many off-takers. So it’s productive, it’s fungible, and it’s durable."
Finally, Gavin Baker, who is widely considered an authority on semiconductor supply chain, noted during NVIDIA's pre-keynote session at the sidelines of GTC Berlin that GPU prices have now gone 'vertical':
"And as the price of tokens has gone down and the mix has shifted to cheaper tokens. The cost to rent an hour of GPU has gone vertical."
"And that is because as you’re getting more tokens that are more useful out of a given GPU hour, that GPU hour becomes more valuable. So we’ve actually seen as the price of tokens has gone down, the prices that you were charging companies per your last call has gone vertical."
Of course, a part of the reason why these dynamics are in play right now has to do with AI inference-related economics. Jensen Huang stated today that each 1 GW of AI compute costs $50 billion but earns an annual revenue of around $40 billion, which equates to a payback of just over 1 year.
Elon Musk also echoed something similar on Tuesday's earnings call, noting that one of the primary reasons why SpaceX was only renting out its compute capacity on a short-term basis relates to the current economic realities, where AI compute is being priced at $30 billion - $50 billion per GW, with a payback period of under a year, and short-duration contracts continuing to renew at higher dollars per watt.
This aligns with our recent reporting on the topic, where we disclosed back in September that, according to Silicon Data, NVIDIA's older A100 and H100 GPUs are currently commanding a residual value that is "well in excess of what 3 or 5-year straight-line schedules would imply," while NVIDIA's B200 GPUs are currently commanding a residual value that is 158 percent of the original cost. In other words, the GPU is trading at a 58 percent premium to its launch price.
The basic premise here is simple: once a first-party owner does retire a given GPU, that GPU does not go to a trash dump. Instead, it simply percolates down the second-hand market's value chain, producing material economic value at each stage of the proverbial rung.
