Investing.com -- As investors reassessed the costs and returns of the artificial intelligence boom Thursday, a report on an alleged Chinese intelligence operation involving Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang added a fresh geopolitical risk to the sector. The report adds another headwind for an AI sector already under pressure from concerns about soaring infrastructure spending, debt-funded expansion and uncertain returns on investment. Alphabet's results have intensified scrutiny of whether massive AI outlays will pay off, while fresh export-control risks could further complicate Nvidia's China business just as investors grow more cautious about the trade. The New York Times reported that U.S. intelligence agencies concluded Alice Huang, an executive at Singapore-based data center company Megaspeed suspected of helping China obtain restricted Nvidia chips, was also gathering intelligence for Beijing. Surveillance reportedly revealed that she had developed a close relationship with Jensen Huang, raising concerns about whether she could gain access to sensitive information about Nvidia or the Trump administration's China policy. President Donald Trump was briefed on the intelligence findings roughly a year ago but chose not to act, according to the Times, citing concerns about disrupting Nvidia's chip sales and complicating trade relations with China. U.S. officials suspect that Megaspeed and its affiliates have helped Chinese companies gain access to advanced computing capacity through data centers in Southeast Asia. Megaspeed's Malaysian affiliate purchased at least $4.8 billion in AI equipment containing Nvidia chips between June 2024 and February 2026, according to trade records cited by the Times. Nvidia said its interactions with Alice Huang were ordinary business dealings and that customers such as Megaspeed receive no sensitive trade secrets or information relevant to national security. The company has previously said it complies with U.S. law and that there is no evidence its chips are being smuggled into China. The report could renew scrutiny of Nvidia's customer-screening procedures and the effectiveness of U.S. export restrictions, particularly as the Trump administration weighs whether to tighten rules governing offshore data centers that provide computing capacity to Chinese firms.
