The 8:30 Hosts Julie Hyman, Pras Subramanian, and Jake Conley outline what investors should know about the New York Times' (NYT) recent report on Nvidia's (NVDA) exposure to a Chinese intelligence asset. New York Times reporting that US intelligence officials have concluded that Alice Wong, this Chinese citizen who's associated with a Singapore-based firm called MegaSpeed, seems to have been a leader there for a long time, has been an intelligence asset passing information to Beijing. The notable thing for Nvidia here is that she's been documented to as being very close with Jensen himself. and that there are now open questions of whether she had access to non-public information about NVIDIA and its chips and what it was doing in its conversations with the White House. That can now be being passed through Alice Wong straight to Beijing and to the leadership there. The Times reports, President Trump was actually briefed on this relationship about a year ago, decided not to do anything about it, kind of sit on it. Jensen Wong has not been given what's called a defensive briefing where the the the government goes to you and says, hey, you might be the target of a foreign asset. Right. And the company told the Times like, if there was anything to worry about, we would have been, we would have been told. And they also say when we we talk to our customers every every day, Jensen Wong meets with thousands of customer heads every year and we never discuss anything critical to national security. But because of the backdrop of Jensen lobbying the White House to open up the sales of the more advanced chips to China, and the movement we've seen there, it raises a lot of questions. I mean also the fact that I mean it was months ago that that Trump was briefed on this. Yeah, a year ago. A year ago. Uh, and then you have incidents where, um, you have Jensen Wong calling up Trump on stage at an event talking about AI and things like that. Uh, the one thing that I'm that is most concerning is, you know, because Jensen has the ear of Trump is is like you mentioned, is stuff coming from Jensen to this to this Alice Wong, right? Who allegedly is an agent for Beijing. For Beijing, yeah, for the Chinese. For Beijing, yeah, for the Chinese Intelligence Service. That's very concerning. Whether, you know, the technology stuff, fine, fine, but it's are you is stuff coming that's to be government information coming there. That's that's the most concerning. Well, and we know that there is a clear business case on the part of from Nvidia's perspective for selling their chips into China. Yeah, yeah. It's not as though there's any like. It's not like they're just doing it for the hell of it. Like yeah, there's yeah there's Right. Exactly. So the interests are aligned in that way. And like to zoom out for a second, one of one of the biggest storylines we've seen are the attempts to smuggle some of Nvidia's top rank chips into China through the black market. And that is something that the administration is is reportedly looking into. alleged MegaSpeed, too. Right. There were there were uh the intelligence service for the US was looking at has been looking at MegaSpeed since late 2024. MegaSpeed is Wong's company. Under under Biden as if this company was basically a middleman to pass the highest advanced chips in China.
