The boss of Nvidia was targeted by an alleged Chinese spy as Beijing sought to secure control of powerful chips for the AI race, US intelligence officials believe. Jensen Huang, the chief executive of Nvidia, was courted by Alice Huang, a top executive at Singaporean technology business Megaspeed, who US officials believe was passing information to China's intelligence agencies. The New York Times reported that Donald Trump was briefed on reports from security officials that someone with direct access to the Nvidia boss was working for Beijing. Mr Huang has been photographed with Ms Huang, a Chinese citizen, at trade show parties, dinners and events in Taiwan. A report by short-selling firm Culper earlier this year alleged that the Nvidia boss and the Megaspeed executive were "very close". An Nvidia spokesman said: "Jensen's interactions with Ms Huang are not unusual or unexpected." Ms Huang had a low profile before taking up a top role at Megaspeed, a major buyer of Nvidia's AI chips. She reportedly worked for a Chinese state media company and a Shanghai-based investment firm before joining Megaspeed, which was spun off from a Chinese gaming business. American and Singaporean officials have been investigating whether Megaspeed, which operates data centres in South East Asia, may have helped Chinese companies swerve US export controls to access powerful AI chips. Nvidia's spokesman said claims that Megaspeed had been funnelling chips to China had been "thoroughly investigated and debunked". The tech giant has previously been blocked from selling any of its most sophisticated chips, which are vital for developing powerful AI systems, to China under US export rules amid fears they would help Beijing catch up in the race for superintelligence. Megaspeed has been one of Nvidia's biggest customers in Asia, buying billions of dollars' worth of its most powerful processors. These are then rented out in data centres, although US rules bar direct exports to China. Mr Trump partially reversed the export ban in January after lobbying from Mr Huang, allowing sales of Nvidia's less powerful AI technology while extracting a 25pc tariff from sales to Chinese customers. Mr Huang has repeatedly criticised America's chip curbs on China, arguing they have hurt US chipmakers and have spurred companies in China to try to catch up with Nvidia. Nvidia's spokesman said: "Megaspeed has been no different than many other regional cloud customers. "Meetings with customers are part of a CEO's job; Jensen talks with thousands of customer executives every year.
