Intel is betting its success in the client and data center spectrums on the next-generation Nova Lake and Coral Rapids CPUs.
Intel Nova Lake Fills An Important Hole In Its Client CPU Gap, A Market That AMD Has Captured Tremendously In Recent Years
It is interesting that besides leaks, the only official way Intel has disclosed its next-gen client & data center CPU lineups has been during investor/earnings calls. While we know a lot about the Nova Lake and Diamond Rapids families today, a year ago, Intel did talk about them but only in these calls. Diamond Rapids did see a good presentation during Hot Chips, but despite being called a savior of its client desktop segment, the company has yet to talk about Nova Lake in the various events it has hosted so far this year.
Now it makes sense why Intel has avoided talking about Nova Lake because they were focusing on Panther Lake and a refreshed Arrow Lake lineup for desktops, but we all know how consumers have responded to Arrow Lake "Core Ultra 200S" in general. The new "Plus" SKUs do offer good value, but they are designed for a platform that has hit a dead end, and Nova Lake itself will be launching on a brand new socket which is expected to offer much better multi-generational CPU support than its predecessors.
So during its Q3 2026 earnings call, Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan reaffirmed that Nova Lake "Core Ultra Series 4" will be their first 18A-P product for the client segment. We know that the compute tile is not the one using this node. Intel did use 18A-P to evaluate early samples, but the chips were always going to use TSMC's N2P node, the same as AMD's next-gen Ryzen "Olympic Ridge" CPUs.
Intel's client segment took a massive hit during Q3 2026 due to memory shortages and increasing prices. The company has already warned of further declines in the coming quarters, and with the DRAM segment being worse in 2027 than it is in 2026, there is little hope that the consumer PC segment is going to do any better.
But with all that said, Intel says that it is "Enthusiastic" with its Nova Lake launch, and is expecting twice as many design wins as Panther Lake at launch.
Nova Lake, our first Intel 18A-P client product, is tracking ahead of schedule, with design wins expecting to be twice those of Panther Lake at launch. We look forward to sharing more at CES in January. As the market normalizes, we expect this portfolio drives meaningful share gains.
Lip-Bu Tan - Intel CEO (Q3 2026 Earnings Call)
Intel is making a lot of bets with Nova Lake, a fully top-to-bottom lineup that will span from high-end desktops to mainstream laptops. The company expects Nova Lake to be a main driver for its market share once the market normalizes.
And it is finally giving us a launch timeframe. CES 2027 in January is said to be the place where we will learn more about Nova Lake CPUs, and it looks like this will be the official unveiling followed by a formal launch. Do note that Nova Lake will launch in multiple phases on desktops, with the single compute tile (up to 28-core SKUs) launching first, followed by dual compute tile models in the latter part of 2027 (up to 52-core SKUs). These chips will feature a new BFC cache solution to tackle AMD's Ryzen X3D chips.
With Nova Lake, Intel plans to fill in the hole in its portfolio for high-end desktops. As mentioned above, Core Ultra 200S failed to do that against AMD's Ryzen 9000 chips, and Intel wants to once again redeem itself in this space with better options for content creators, ultra-enthusiasts, and more.
The one added piece of this is we come into next year with Nova Lake as our product offering. We think this is the best set of products we've had in a very long time. We think it covers the gamut of what's required to participate in client. We're very excited about it.
You know, as we go into next year, you know, we'll have Nova Lake, and I think the important aspect of Nova Lake is, you know, we've had a bit of a hole in our portfolio for high-end desktop, and Nova Lake filled in that gap.
Lip-Bu Tan - Intel CEO (Q3 2026 Earnings Call)
Besides the client side, Intel also shed some light on its Xeon side of things, which will play a pivotal role in the company's future, primarily the AI side of things. The DCAI side has done well, but supply constraints have really hampered its full potential. Intel also faces pressure from a growing list of competition from Arm solutions such as NVIDIA's Vera, Arm's AGI, and its age-old rival in the x86 segment, AMD.
AMD's EPYC Venice CPUs are already ramping while Intel is yet to release its Diamond Rapids CPUs. With up to 256 P-Cores, Diamond Rapids launching in 2027 will have a lot of competition to face.
Intel once again highlights that it expects its Coral Rapids Xeon CPUs, the generation succeeding Diamond Rapids, to be competitive against AMD's EPYC family while using the 14A process node, and to take the lead against AMD EPYC with future tick-tock Xeon chips.
Now we've been hearing a lot from Intel about its Xeon CPUs rivaling AMD EPYC, but generations later, the company has yet to offer solid solutions, only being seen as the 2nd-tier solution on the market. This led Intel to reverse course on some decisions made by former CEO Pat Gelsinger, such as the removal of SMT, which comes back with Coral Rapids.
And then we are in the shipping in revenue that's on 18A. We should have capacity for that. And then Diamond Rapids, that will be 2027.We have 18A-P will be ready for that. And of course, the Coral Rapids coming up in 2028, that will be on the 14A. So those, I think, will be in pretty good shape.
So clearly we have a roadmap. We like what we have in terms of Coral Rapids will be competitive to AMD. And then next, next general product, the Tick-Tock will be ahead of the AMD on that.
Lip-Bu Tan - Intel CEO (Q3 2026 Earnings Call)
Despite near-term headwinds from memory shortages that have pressured client volumes, the company remains highly confident in the platform’s design-win momentum and its ability to drive meaningful share gains once the market normalizes.
We think next year and in the future years, we're in a market share gain type of environment for our client. Obviously, unfortunate that we've run into this challenge on the memory side and its impact on client, but we are very enthusiastic about the product side. You didn't ask this question, but I'll just extend it out beyond this year.
We do think that the PC is going to go through a renaissance despite this. We think that as AI workloads start to shift around, there's going to be a lot of workload required in the client space, either as a PC or as some kind of agentic box. We do see this market as being pretty interesting.
Lip-Bu Tan - Intel CEO (Q3 2026 Earnings Call)
On the data-center side, the succession from Diamond Rapids to Coral Rapids (on the 14A node) is positioned as the point where Intel expects to close the competitiveness gap with AMD’s EPYC lineup while restoring features such as SMT, setting the stage for subsequent generations to pull ahead. Taken together, these efforts reflect a measured bet that stronger product fundamentals, coupled with a longer-term “PC renaissance” fueled by shifting AI workloads, can translate into sustained market-share recovery across both client and server segments.
