베를린이 reportedly(보고된 바에 따르면) 지불하는 것의 의미
이러한 작업은 지난해 대학, 연구소 및 AI 기업들과 함께 시작된 독일 프로젝트인 SOOFI(주권 오픈 소스 기반 모델, Sovereign Open Source Foundation Models)를 통해 진행될 것이다.

Nvidia (NVDA) is reportedly lining up another government partnership in Europe. Germany plans a wide-ranging cooperation agreement with Nvidia to push AI deeper into German industry, Reuters reported on Thursday, October 15, citing the business daily Handelsblatt. The deal is expected to be unveiled next week at the government’s Invest in Germany Summit in Berlin, which CEO Jensen Huang will attend.
Government sources confirmed the plan to Reuters on Friday, October 16, saying Germany will announce the agreement next week with partners beyond Nvidia. The funding, the participants and the terms still rest on Handelsblatt’s reporting, and nothing official has been published.
What Berlin Is Reportedly Paying For
Handelsblatt says the agreement has two goals. The first is to lay the groundwork for physical AI, meaning the tools used to train robots and self-driving vehicles. The second is to build high-performance AI models for industry. That work would run through SOOFI (Sovereign Open Source Foundation Models), a German project launched last year with universities, research institutes and AI companies.
Berlin would put in hundreds of millions of euros for computing power and model training, and Nvidia would send engineers. About 12 German companies are expected to join. They include Siemens (SIEGY), Audi (owned by Volkswagen (VWAGY)) and the AI startup Black Forest Labs.
The Deal Is a Rounding Error for Nvidia
Start with the size of the deal. Nvidia booked $302.97 billion in revenue over the last 12 months, after its revenue roughly doubled this year. Suppose Germany spent a full €1 billion and every euro went to Nvidia hardware. That would still be under 0.4% of the total.
The business this deal targets is bigger than Nvidia’s segment table suggests. In fiscal 2026, which ended in January, the Automotive segment made $2.35 billion, or 1.1% of total revenue, against $193.74 billion from Data Center. But CFO Colette Kress said on the February earnings call that physical AI brought in more than $6 billion that year, and Nvidia put the figure above $9 billion over the trailing 12 months when it reported in May.
That puts physical AI at more than roughly 3.5% of Nvidia’s sales over the same 12 months. Automotive, the one piece of it Nvidia broke out, grew 39% last fiscal year, against 68% for Data Center.
Why Nvidia Wants Germany Anyway
For Nvidia, the money matters less than whose tools German industry trains on.
Siemens is already building a joint industrial AI operating system with Nvidia, announced at CES in January. Deutsche Telekom (DTEGY) runs an industrial AI cloud with Nvidia under a €1 billion partnership, with Nvidia supplying 10,000 GPUs. That cloud already hosts SOOFI: Leibniz Universität Hannover hired Telekom to supply the project’s computing infrastructure. That makes it a likely home for any new compute spending, though no allocation has been reported.
Manufacturers that train robots on Nvidia’s software today are the likeliest buyers of its chips for those robots later. Some of that shows up in Edge Computing, which made $7.2 billion in the July quarter, up 27%. That category also holds PCs, game consoles and workstations, though, so it doesn’t isolate robots and cars.
The Question Nvidia’s German Deal Leaves Open
The reports don’t say how much of the money becomes Nvidia revenue, and the split may not settle it. Telekom’s cloud has run on Nvidia hardware since February, so renting more of its capacity pays Telekom first. Nvidia gains only if the extra demand forces new chip purchases or software deals. Research grants to SOOFI can end up buying computing time too.
Either way, the deal won’t move Nvidia’s numbers. The detail to listen for in Berlin next week is whether Siemens, Audi and the other companies commit their own spending on top of the state’s money. If they do, a government program turns into a customer pipeline for Nvidia’s physical AI business.
