Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan believes that the AI industry will continue to experience a hardware shortage for the next two to three years. Tan made the remarks at a conference organized by DBS Bank in Singapore, where he commented on the biggest requirements for AI and his expectations about quantum computing. The Intel CEO is one of the most technologically in-tune executives in the sector and has his eye on several high-growth sectors such as next-generation chip manufacturing technologies and materials.
Intel CEO Says ROI From Artificial Intelligence Is Driving Sentiment
The growth in the use of agentic AI has created demand for CPUs over GPUs and helped Lip-Bu Tan spearhead Intel's recovery. For instance, in the firm's second quarter, its Data Center and AI business division's revenue grew by 59% annually. Tan discussed the shift in Intel's second-quarter earnings, where he remarked that the ratio of needing 8 GPUs to 1 CPU in AI training had dropped to 4:1 as the role of agentic AI expanded.
The Intel CEO, speaking at a DBS event in Singapore on October 12th, shared additional thoughts about AI, key trends in AI and other sectors such as quantum computing. Starting from AI, Tan outlined that AI hardware would remain in short supply for the next two to three years as the technology supply chain was experiencing persistent constraints.
His remarks come as shortage in key components, such as memory chips, has continued to push prices higher for months while technologies such as TSMC's packaging have also experienced constraints.
The Intel CEO also discussed frontier AI models, open source and quantum computing. Tan commented that the token costs of the Chinese frontier AI models were significantly lower. He added that the models' performance, considering the low token costs, was satisfactory.
Tan also discussed AI investment and outlined that not only was investment capital the primary constraint in the buildout, but added that the longer-term need to demonstrate return on investment (ROI) was paramount in sustaining investor interest.
As for quantum computing, Tan remained optimistic and shared that he believed quantum computing could enter the mainstream over the next three to five years. The Intel CEO is quite invested in the quantum computing industry. Late last month, he revealed his top quantum computing investments through his venture capital firm and commented that finding the right application for quantum computing was the key if the technology were to become popular.
