Minisforum's new AIC brings B850 chipset, and one user has already tested the expansion card.
Minsiforum AMD B850 PCIe Expansion Card Offers Four M.2 Ports Without PCIe Bifurcation
Minisforum has started selling its first AMD B850 chipset-based expansion card called ESP4B. Moreover, we now also have the first hands-on review by a Redditor, who provided a closer look at what happens when the AMD B850 chipset is placed on an Add-in-Card. As per the official website, the Minisforum ESP4B uses the AMD Promontory 21 chipset variant and connects to the host system through a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface.
It provides four M.2 slots, but their available bandwidth depends on how many SSDs are installed. The first two drives, when connected, operate at PCIe 4.0 x4, as demonstrated by the Redditor u/jozews321, who got the ESP4B. The user also reported the speed at which the SSDs operate once you populate two or four M.2 slots on the AIC.
The Redditor tested it across various platforms, including older hardware, and found that it also worked on a 2011 Dell OptiPlex 900. The card operated with an ARM-based Minisforum system as well, showing that its compatibility extends beyond conventional AMD- and Intel-based PCs. Performance demonstrated by the user was close to the native PCIe 4.0 connectivity as the Kingston Gen 4.0 SSD achieved around 6.1 GB/s read speeds.
Once all four M.2 slots were populated, the M.2 slots switched to x2 mode, delivering around 3.3 GB/s of read speeds. Apart from these SSD slots, the PCIe AIC also delivers an OCuLink port, which allows adding an external GPU but can also be switched between OCuLink functionality and four SATA devices with the included adapter. And then we have a fast 20 Gbps Type-C port for high-bandwidth devices.
While this might be one of the first B850-based AICs, we have already seen a few B650-based AICs recently, including one by Lekuo and recently one by JINGYUE. However, the Minisforum B850 AIC is much more expensive at $135.
