TSMC’s latest lithography is typically adopted by Apple in its A-series chipsets to gain a competitive edge in the industry, but on this occasion, the company may be moving to a new manufacturing process out of desperation. As leading-edge chip shipments grow in demand thanks to the AI boom, analysts believe TSMC will race to commence mass production of its 1.4nm node in the first half of 2028, making it almost certain that Apple will unveil the A22 Pro on the same technology the following year. The AI boom gives Apple a tremendous opportunity to unveil the industry’s first 1.4nm SoC made by TSMC, but it also means a supply risk for the technology giant An analyst note from J.P. Morgan shared by @OptionKing666 on X discusses the likelihood of TSMC accelerating the mass production of its 1.4nm node, also called A14, or Angstrom. With pilot production reportedly happening in Q3 2027, TSMC is expected to rely on four plants to keep up with demand, but looking at how AI has introduced a ravenous demand for leading-edge chips, the mass production timeline has gone into overdrive. TSMC was earlier reported to begin 1.4nm wafer production in the second half of 2028, and as AI chips outstrip supply for the entirety of 2026 and 2027, the Taiwanese semiconductor giant will have little choice but to ensure that there’s sufficient supply to meet its customers’ requirements. Despite Apple no longer being TSMC’s most lucrative client, it still carries immense weight, accounting for a sizable chunk of its supply chain partner’s annual revenue. By switching over to the 1.4nm process in 2028 by introducing the A22 Pro, Apple is expected to repeat the gesture. The AI boom can be thought of as a double-edged sword for the Cupertino firm, because it not only has forced the technology giant to abandon the 2nm node after just two generations, but it also puts Apple in a position where it can potentially command a generational advantage over its competitors. With each 1.4nm wafer estimated to cost $45,000, companies like Qualcomm and MediaTek, which are already struggling in the handset business due to a lack of smartphone demand materialization from the DRAM shortage, may not foot such a massive bill for the next-generation lithography and may sit on the 2nm process for another generation. Even if they want to maintain competitiveness with Apple, the cost of each 1.4nm wafer will force Qualcomm and MediaTek to charge ludicrous premiums, resulting in the same dwindling smartphone demand, as partners will have to charge higher sums for their flagship phones, which consumers won’t be able to afford. In short, surging demand for chips during the AI race is both a blessing and a curse for companies like Apple. Follow Wccftech on Google to get more of our news coverage in your feeds.
