Broadcom Vs. Oracle: Whose AI Chip Debt Financing Scheme Looks Worse?
Oracle and Broadcom both borrowed from the AI buildout in very different ways, and one of those balance sheets looks far more dangerous than the other right now.
Oracle (NYSE:ORCL | ORCL Price Prediction) and Broadcom (NASDAQ:AVGO) both reported in September, and both now sit in the middle of the AI credit scare. Oracle borrows money and sells stock to build GPU data centers itself. Broadcom sells custom chips, then helps its biggest customers find outside money to pay for them. Both approaches carry risk. Only Oracle’s sits directly on its own balance sheet.
Oracle Spends Ahead of Revenue While Broadcom Banks Cash
Oracle has no shortage of demand. Cloud infrastructure revenue reached $7.39B, up 121% YoY, and RPO, or signed future revenue, hit $664 billion. That backlog changes slowly: management expects around half to become sales over the next 36 months. The costs come first. Capex hit $28.5B, free cash flow came in at negative $5.4B, and interest expense rose 55% to $1.4B. Oracle also finished a $20 billion at-the-market stock sale, which dilutes existing shareholders.
Broadcom’s numbers look like a different business. AI semiconductor revenue came in at $16.7 billion, up 221%, driven by custom XPUs and Ethernet networking. Capex was just $532M, so free cash flow reached $13.67B, equal to 46% of revenue. That cash paid down $5.6 billion of long-term debt.
Broadcom’s Guarantees Hide a Real Wrinkle
Broadcom has its own financing quirk. Through its AI XPV platform with Apollo Global Management (NYSE:APO) and Blackstone (NYSE:BX), it closed a $35 billion first tranche for Anthropic’s one gigawatt deployment. Outside partners underwrite the assets, but Broadcom may provide “modest residual value guarantees”, which CFO Amie Thuener called “contingent liabilities.” One analyst cited a prior maximum exposure of about $29 billion, and Thuener declined to put a cap on future deals. Vendor financing tends to look harmless until customers stumble.
Oracle’s structure has become just as creative, with prepayments, bring-your-own-hardware deals and supplier financing. Clay Magouyrk said “while there clearly are capital expenditures, it does not require Oracle to go out and find additional cash to do it.” Still, CFO Hilary Maxson gave no timeframe for positive free cash flow.
December 14 Will Show Whether Oracle’s Cash Gap Narrows
Oracle expects fiscal 2027 capex of $90 billion to $95 billion, with net cash capex of not more than $70 billion. I’ll be looking for a free cash flow timeline in its results due December 14 of 2026. On Broadcom, keep an eye on whether a possible Anthropic IPO cuts the need for guarantees. The recent OpenAI revenue report that sank AI stocks showed how quickly concerns about lab credit hit both names.
Why Oracle’s Scheme Looks Worse to Me
Oracle fell 51.75% over the past year while Broadcom gained 5.56%. The balance sheets help explain that gap. Oracle carries $236.06B in total liabilities, burns cash, and depends on a backlog that needs years to changes. Broadcom’s exposure is contingent and supported by huge free cash flow. I lean toward Broadcom’s model. A firm Oracle cash flow date, or a bigger-than-expected Broadcom guarantee disclosure, would change my view.
