China’s CXMT Sparked a Global Chip Stock Rout. Why Samsung, Micron and SK Hynix Are Tumbling.
The company rattled investors with news of a technological advance that could allow it to produce more efficient memory chips capable of storing greater amounts of data in smaller spaces.
A little-known Chinese chipmaker that became a $500 billion powerhouse in just a few months sent shockwaves through global technology markets Tuesday, triggering a selloff in semiconductor stocks after announcing progress on a memory chip design that could challenge some of the industry's biggest players.
ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), China's leading memory chip manufacturer, rattled investors with news of a technological advance that could allow it to produce more efficient memory chips capable of storing greater amounts of data in smaller spaces.
The announcement raised concerns that Chinese manufacturers are closing the technological gap with industry leaders Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix and Micron Technology, potentially threatening their market share and pricing power at a time when artificial intelligence is driving enormous demand for advanced memory.
South Korea's SK Hynix plunged 10% Tuesday, while Samsung Electronics dropped 7.4%. In the United States, Micron shares sank 5%, with SanDisk, Seagate Technology and Western Digital also suffering losses.
The declines reflected growing investor anxiety about China's ability to compete in one of the semiconductor industry's most profitable segments, particularly as memory chips become increasingly important to artificial intelligence infrastructure.
A spokesperson for independent market research studio LEOW Quant Technologies told International Business Times that "options traders had been cooling on Micron for over a week. "
"A Chinese rival packing more data into less space is a pricing threat to a memory maker like Micron, and for Nvidia it's mostly a question of supply and cost. If NVDA's call share starts to slide toward Micron's, I'd read that as the worry spreading from memory pricing to the whole AI hardware chain," the spokesperson added.
Founded in 2016 and headquartered in Hefei, China, CXMT spent much of its early existence operating outside the international spotlight. That changed dramatically in July 2026, when the company made its stock market debut on Shanghai's technology-focused STAR Market.
Its shares surged nearly 466% during their first trading session, briefly making CXMT the most valuable publicly listed company in mainland China. Although the stock has subsequently retreated approximately 4% from its IPO-day price of 49 yuan, CXMT still commands a market capitalization of roughly 3.46 trillion yuan, equivalent to $520 billion.
That valuation places it within striking distance of Chinese technology giant Tencent, valued at approximately 3.87 trillion yuan. The company's rapid ascent has coincided with significant gains in the global market for dynamic random-access memory, commonly known as DRAM. According to an HSBC research note published Thursday, CXMT's global DRAM market share has climbed to approximately 10%, compared with just 4% a year earlier.
That expansion has occurred despite U.S. export restrictions designed to limit China's access to advanced semiconductor manufacturing technology. CXMT's latest development involves a memory architecture known as 4F², designed to increase storage density by fitting more memory cells into a smaller physical area.
The company reportedly plans to introduce a server-memory product using the architecture before the end of 2026. The technology could improve manufacturing efficiency and chip capacity, although its commercial performance and competitiveness against established suppliers remain unproven.
Business professor at St. Edwards University Arie Brish told IBT that "In semiconductor manufacturing, smaller is not necessarily cheaper, because although reducing memory cell size can theoretically increase the number of chips produced per wafer, the real economic benefit depends heavily on manufacturing yield."
"As dimensions shrink, manufacturing tolerances become increasingly challenging, potentially reducing the percentage of usable chips. Without published yield data, it is premature to conclude that CXMT's technological achievement translates into a commercial breakthrough."
CXMT also trails established competitors in high-bandwidth memory, or HBM, a crucial component of advanced AI computing systems. Nevertheless, its expanding manufacturing capabilities and growing domestic customer base are increasing pressure on established suppliers.
