Not the first ever scam through Amazon, but definitely a rare one where the user gets a different product both times.
Ryzen 7 9850X3D Sold and Shipped by Amazon Ends up With Intel Core i3 Processor; User Orders Another 9850X3D, But Discovers Core i3 Processor Again
A few days ago, the Redditor u/BitProfessional3792 reported ordering the most powerful gaming processor from Amazon. The user says he bought an AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D alongside an MSI MAG X870E Carbon motherboard to build/upgrade his PC. The products were sold and shipped by Amazon, which means a lower chance of getting scammed.
However, once the CPU box arrived, the user found the box containing the Intel Core i3 3000 series processor instead of the Ryzen 7 9850X3D. One of the pics uploaded by the user shows that the box seal on the package was intact. However, in another pic, we can see the box was tampered with. The box was torn at the bottom, which clearly indicates someone has removed the processor from the box and replaced it with the Core i3 chip.
The user decided to return the item, and till he gets his refund, he decided to buy another AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D. This was a same-day delivery, and he got the product the same day, but to his surprise, this was just another tampered box with a different CPU. The box contained the same Intel Core i3 3000 series processor, which is surprising enough since it was also sold and shipped by Amazon.
The pics he uploaded once again confirm that someone tore the box from the bottom, pulled out the 9850X3D, and replaced it with an Intel Core i3 processor. Someone in the comments highlighted that both boxes have an LPN sticker. LPN, or License Plate sticker, is usually used by Amazon to track the inventory through its fulfillment network. However, it's commonly associated with returned items.
This means someone who previously got these boxes replaced the processors and returned them. It's a shame that Amazon's return process couldn't see that the packages were tampered with before sending these boxes to a new user. The user says Amazon is currently working on the refund, and I am sure he will get it, but I think the user will always think twice before ordering a computer part from Amazon again.
