Nvidia is poised to prop up the British AI giant Nscale amid signs that the data centre boom is beginning to unwind.
The world's biggest chip company is reportedly in discussions to provide financial backing for Nscale's new flagship US data centre that Anthropic plans to use.
Nvidia would provide credit support to backstop the construction and electricity costs of the new complex in West Virginia, which will be equipped with its chips.
The support, first reported by The Information, would hand a much-needed boost to Nscale after Microsoft pulled the plug on a similar agreement for a major data centre in Essex.
The US tech giant, which is one of Nscale's two largest customers, was to become the anchor tenant at the company's first data centre in its home country as part of a broader pledge to invest £22bn in the UK.
But The Telegraph revealed this month that Microsoft had pulled out of the project, which has faced delays and is now in limbo.
The decision has cast a shadow over Nscale's plans to debut on the New York stock exchange in a flotation worth up to $35bn (£26bn).
It comes amid wider concerns about whether AI infrastructure businesses will deliver sufficient returns.
Australian rival Firmus cancelled plans for its $30bn initial public offering earlier this month, citing market conditions. Other "neocloud" companies, which build data centres for AI, such as CoreWeave and Nebius, have seen their shares and bonds slump.
Soaring interest rates have driven up the cost of debt-funded AI infrastructure projects, fuelling concerns about the sustainability of the neocloud business model.
The rapidly-growing AI sector has also faced scrutiny for "circular financing", where tech giants make significant investments in companies that are also major customers. Nvidia is already an investor in Nscale.
This has triggered warnings from investors such as Michael Burry, who was depicted in the Oscar-winning film The Big Short, about an AI bubble and the looming threat of a market crash.
Nscale was founded by Australian entrepreneur Josh Payne, a former coal miner, and has appointed Sheryl Sandberg and Sir Nick Clegg, both former Facebook executives, to its board.
The company has been privately valued at $15bn and a stock-market float could make it one of Britain's most valuable AI firms.
However, the success of its listing will be viewed as a critical test of investors' continued appetite for debt-fuelled AI businesses.
Nscale and Nvidia were contacted for comment.
