Intel's ambitious US semiconductor manufacturing expansion appears to be gaining momentum once again, with the company reporting significant progress at its Arizona and Ohio facilities. The developments come amid surging demand for data center processors driven by AI workloads, potentially signaling renewed confidence in Intel's manufacturing and foundry ambitions.
According to Bloomberg, Intel has begun installing manufacturing equipment at Fab 62, located at its Ocotillo campus near Phoenix, Arizona. The facility will become Intel's sixth high-volume manufacturing fab at the site, with operations expected to commence by the end of 2028. Its neighboring Fab 52 is already operational, marking another important step in Intel's efforts to expand advanced semiconductor production on American soil.
Meanwhile, Intel's much-delayed Ohio One megaproject, situated in New Albany, Ohio, has reached a major construction milestone, with crews installing the first large structural truss on the site's first fabrication plant.
In an official company update, Naga Chandrasekaran, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology and Operations Officer of Intel Foundry, emphasized the growing need for domestic semiconductor manufacturing capacity:
"Demand for computing power is growing at an unprecedented pace."
The Ohio development is particularly noteworthy given the project's troubled history. Initially announced in 2022 as part of a $28 billion investment in two leading-edge fabrication plants, Ohio One has suffered repeated delays as Intel struggled with financial difficulties, manufacturing setbacks, and insufficient external foundry demand. The company subsequently postponed the first fab's operational timeline to 2030–2031, while the second is currently scheduled for 2032.
As we previously reported, Intel was reportedly offering overtime bonuses to accelerate construction at Ohio One earlier this year, suggesting that the chipmaker was already stepping up its efforts to bring the massive complex online.
The renewed momentum also represents an interesting development under CEO Lip-Bu Tan, who has repeatedly stressed the importance of financial discipline and tying manufacturing investments to actual customer demand. Intel's latest expansion progress could therefore indicate growing confidence in its future order book, although the company has yet to secure a substantial roster of publicly announced external foundry customers.
Indeed, the ongoing AI infrastructure boom has considerably strengthened demand for Intel's server CPUs, with the chipmaker reportedly struggling to keep up with orders. During its July earnings presentation, Intel raised its 2026 capital expenditure forecast to more than $20 billion, while anticipating significantly higher spending in 2027, predominantly across its US manufacturing network.
Nevertheless, constructing new fabrication plants is only part of the challenge. Intel must ultimately secure sufficient manufacturing volumes, improve its process technology competitiveness, and attract major external customers if its ambitious foundry strategy is to deliver sustainable returns.
