NVIDIA's next-generation Rubin AI accelerators are expected to predominantly feature 12-Hi HBM4 memory, despite earlier reports suggesting that the company was pushing its suppliers toward less complex 8-Hi configurations. Meanwhile, the ongoing memory shortage could send HBM prices soaring in 2027.
According to a new report from DIGITIMES, citing research from Counterpoint Research, most Rubin-based products are expected to retain their original 12-layer HBM4 configurations. This contradicts earlier speculation that NVIDIA was moving toward lower-capacity stacks to address manufacturing challenges and supply constraints.
In fact, NVIDIA's official Rubin GPU specifications already outline a 12-Hi HBM4 configuration, delivering up to 288 GB of memory capacity and a staggering 22 TB/s of bandwidth per GPU. Counterpoint argues that such capabilities remain essential for demanding AI workloads, where memory bandwidth and capacity take precedence over cost savings. The research firm also claims it has found no evidence of 4-Hi HBM adoption among custom AI ASICs (Application-Specific Integrated Circuits).
NVIDIA's 8-Hi HBM4 Plans Could Help Address Manufacturing Constraints, But Don't Expect Lower Memory Prices
Interestingly, South Korea's ZDNet Korea reported back in August that NVIDIA had requested Samsung Electronics and SK hynix to increase their supplies of 8-Hi HBM4 during the second half of 2026.
The move was reportedly motivated by thermal concerns, manufacturing yields, and supply chain availability. HBM4 doubles the memory interface width to 2,048 bits compared to HBM3E, while stacking and bonding 12 DRAM dies introduces additional manufacturing complexity.
However, these reports aren't necessarily contradictory. NVIDIA could increase its adoption of 8-Hi HBM4 while retaining 12-Hi configurations for most Rubin accelerators, although the company has yet to officially confirm any changes to its memory supply strategy. Specifications for the subsequent Rubin Ultra platform also remain under evaluation.
More importantly, reducing HBM stack heights won't necessarily translate into cheaper memory. According to TrendForce, 8-Hi HBM products could command a 10–20% higher price per gigabit than their 12-Hi counterparts in 2027.
That's because each HBM stack requires a base die, whose manufacturing cost must be distributed across fewer DRAM layers in an 8-Hi configuration. Nevertheless, smaller stacks could allow manufacturers to supply more accelerators with their limited DRAM output while reducing overall memory costs per GPU.
TrendForce also forecasts a massive 121% year-over-year increase in blended HBM average selling prices in 2027, driven by persistent supply shortages, the growing adoption of premium HBM4, and the expected introduction of HBM4E during the second half of the year.
Crucially, that forecast reflects the changing product mix rather than a uniform price increase across all HBM products. Still, with AI accelerators competing against conventional DRAM for limited manufacturing capacity, the memory industry's pricing pressures show few signs of easing, unfortunately.
