AMD's first Arm-based CPUs in over a decade, codenamed Soundwave, are heading to Surface laptops from Microsoft. AMD Soundwave APUs To Bring Arm's Competitive Value To Surface Laptops As Apple's Pressure Mounts on Microsoft The AMD Soundwave SoCs were first spotted back in 2024, when they were listed as a next-generation 3nm APU design. Few details were known back then, but a year later, we learned about Soundwave being AMD's attempt at the Arm ecosystem. Initially primed for a 2026 launch for Microsoft's 2026 Surface lineup, the plans changed a bit. Currently, Microsoft is powering its Surface lineup with Snapdragon X2 and RTX Spark SoCs. The former is featured on 12- and 13-inch mainstream platforms, while the latter recently launched & brings high performance to 16-inch designs. Soundwave SoCs are said to be based around the BGA 1074 "FF5" socket in a 32x27mm package, as revealed in shipping manifests. It is said to feature a version of Arm cores with at least 6 cores in a 2+4 configuration (Performance + Efficiency), an RDNA 3.5 GPU with at least four cores, and 16 MB of cache. The chip will be designed around a low TDP ranging between 5-10W. These plans seem to be going into action, and will be AMD's formal return to the Arm ecosystem, which last saw action back in 2012 with the K12 SoC. AMD's ambidextrous roadmap back in the day was more promising in regard to Arm development, but the company focused all efforts on the x86 ecosystem, which resulted in the development of the first Zen cores. Jim Keller has been very aggressive against AMD's stance on the development of Arm-based SoCs, even calling out how the K12 project was cancelled after he had completed all the work on the chip & it looks like AMD's return is the result of the competition bringing out their own solutions based on Arm architectures. Qualcomm's Snapdragon X2 and NVIDIA's RTX Spark SoCs are going all-in on the Arm space in a bid to rival Apple's M-series chips. Microsoft has been trying to stir up some response to the Neo from Apple, and it looks like the deal is set between AMD and Microsoft to release an aggressively positioned Arm-based SoC in the form of Soundwave, which could enter the same ~$599 segment as the MacBook Neo. The 12- and 13-inch Microsoft Surface start at $1149 and $1299, respectively. An AMD Soundwave-powered Surface laptop should retail under $999 based on its specifications, but we can't say for sure given today's memory pricing. The launch could be planned for 2027, and we might hear a bit more during CES 2027. With AMD, Microsoft will complete its trio of Arm-based Windows PC offerings, so it will be exciting times for customers who will have more options to select from.
