Investing.com - TSMC posted a $23.59 billion net profit for the third quarter of 2026, a 68.7% year-over-year surge that marked its sixth consecutive record quarter, yet the earnings beat has done little to arrest a deepening selloff across AI-linked semiconductor stocks.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, the world's largest contract chipmaker and a foundry supplier to NVIDIA, AMD, and Apple, is the stock most exposed to AI hardware demand: its revenue is tied directly to the volume and complexity of chips ordered by hyperscalers and AI accelerator makers.
Despite earnings per ADR of $4.60 — well above the $4.42 consensus forecast — Taiwan-listed shares closed down 2% on Thursday.
"We did not see any sign of a slowdown [in demand]," the company's officials said today.
Analysts at Vital Knowledge said that some of the language on the investor call suggested that "non-AI parts of the chip market are witnessing more sluggish demand trends."
Advanced nodes at 7nm and below accounted for 79% of total wafer revenue in Q3, with 2nm technology already contributing 8%. High-performance computing, the segment most directly tied to AI chip orders, rose to 68% of platform revenue.
"The AI market continues to be very strong. Recent developments are very positive to AI's long-term demand outlook. We observe increasing AI demand fueled by the rising adoption of agentic AI. In addition, we are observing great adoption of open-source AI models," the company's officials said.
The company is investing $265 billion in U.S. chip fabs in Arizona and has maintained 2026 capital expenditure guidance of $60 billion to $64 billion, signalling confidence in the structural AI buildout even as near-term sentiment sours.
For Q4 2026, TSMC guided revenue of $52.3 billion to $54.3 billion, implying year-over-year growth of as much as 61%. CEO C.C. Wei described current demand as "extremely robust" but tempered enthusiasm about the year ahead.
"We are being prudent in our business planning going into 2027," citing rising component prices and macroeconomic uncertainty weighing on consumer and price-sensitive end-markets.
Still, the TSMC stock is not alone in its misery. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX) dropped 4.3% on Wednesday to close at 11,684.4, one of its steepest single-session declines in recent months. AMD fell 5.7%, NVIDIA shed 3.2%, Broadcom dropped 3.1%, and ASML lost 3.9%.
