Samsung Electronics has reportedly cleared another major hurdle in the increasingly competitive HBM race, with its next-generation 12-layer HBM4E memory reportedly passing qualification testing at NVIDIA and several major hyperscalers. According to a new report from Korean outlet Hankyung, Samsung’s memory division completed qualification testing of its 12-Hi HBM4E with NVIDIA and other large data center customers toward the end of September. Qualification is one of the most important steps before a memory product can move toward commercial deployment, as customers evaluate whether the hardware meets their required performance, reliability, thermal, and other specifications. There is an important caveat, however. The report only claims that Samsung has passed customer qualification; actual supply volumes, contract values and mass-production delivery schedules have not yet been confirmed. Samsung itself declined to verify the report, telling Hankyung that it was unable to confirm whether the HBM4E qualification had been completed. Samsung began shipping samples of its 12-layer HBM4E to major global customers in May. The chip packs 48 GB of capacity per stack, operates at a stable 14 Gbps per pin and can scale to up to 16 Gbps, delivering as much as 3.6 TB/s of bandwidth. Samsung says this represents more than a 20% performance increase over its HBM4 generation. Under the hood, HBM4E combines Samsung’s sixth-generation 10nm-class 1c DRAM with a 4nm logic base die produced by Samsung Foundry, building on the manufacturing technologies already deployed with its HBM4 products. Samsung previously said the chip also brings improvements to power efficiency and thermal characteristics, two increasingly important factors as AI accelerators continue pushing memory bandwidth and power requirements higher. Samsung has been moving aggressively to strengthen its position against SK hynix and Micron in the HBM market. The company began mass-producing HBM4 earlier this year, with the memory designed for NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin platform, before quickly following it up with HBM4E samples. If the reported NVIDIA qualification is accurate, Samsung has now crossed a significant technical milestone. The next question is whether that translates into substantial HBM4E orders once NVIDIA and other AI customers begin ramping their next-generation accelerators.
