The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 might be Qualcomm’s first 2nm SoC, but the improved lithography isn’t sufficient to prevent performance issues during Samsung’s internal tests, according to the latest report. However, unlike other companies, the Korean giant has the luxury of switching over to the Exynos 2700 if the problems aren’t addressed, but that’ll spell even more trouble for Qualcomm.
The lack of internal test results shared by Samsung could indicate a propaganda-based campaign to uplift the Exynos 2700’s hype
Despite Qualcomm moving to “Offset PoP” packaging for the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, which is shown to improve sustained performance on the SoC, Sedaily reports that Samsung continues to find problems with the 2nm silicon. The findings have been shared with Qualcomm, with Samsung requesting that these overheating hurdles are addressed in this month.
Based on the latest development, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 continues to suffer from throttling issues, with its clock speeds dropping when running taxing workloads continuously. Unfortunately, the report doesn’t present or cite any figures from Samsung’s internal testing, making it difficult to assess its veracity.
If anything, the report could be a subtle approach towards boosting the Exynos 2700’s hype, with the possibility that it could be used in the upcoming Galaxy S27 Ultra. The silicon is said to be Samsung’s upcoming SoC fabricated on the company’s slightly improved 2nm process, known as “SF2P.” We have witnessed on previous occasions where Korean media outlets have attempted to market chipsets like the Exynos 2600, only for the latter to come up short against the competition in a multitude of benchmarks.
Then again, we shouldn’t ignore Qualcomm’s strategies, as the company not only aggressively adopts the latest manufacturing process but also targets higher clock speeds to gain an edge over its rivals in single-core and multi-core benchmarks like Geekbench 7. Sadly, this decision forces its SoCs to operate at significantly higher power limits, so the extra performance gain is accompanied by a major trade-off.
This approach is vastly different from what Apple has done with its A20 Pro, as it not only focuses on advanced lithography, but immense architectural improvements. Paired with the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s vapor chamber, the flagship runs cooler than Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5-powered Android smartphones with dedicated fans. We’ve reached out to Qualcomm for a comment regarding these claims, and we’ll update our readers if anything comes up, but remember to treat this report with a pinch of salt.
