As per a prominent leaker, Intel's upcoming Nova Lake CPUs could deliver up to 20% higher gaming performance than Arrow Lake.
Intel 28-Core Nova Lake Chip Expected to Benefit Significantly From APX, and Could Deliver Substantially Higher Gaming Performance Than Arrow Lake
As we get closer to the launch of Intel's next-generation CPUs, we are getting a glimpse of the performance through leaks. We still don't have the official charts or any benchmarks on popular platforms, but according to recent reports by prominent leakers, it appears that Nova Lake is going to deliver a substantial performance boost over Arrow Lake.
Prominent leaker @Haze2K1 has posted some numbers associated with the Nova Lake-S processors and has claimed that the upcoming chips could deliver up to a good 20% boost in gaming performance vs. Arrow Lake. As per the leaker, Nova Lake could deliver up to 17% higher raw single-threaded performance with bLLC enabled and up to 8% without it. The 20% improvement in gaming performance is reportedly through Intel's Advanced Performance Extensions, or APX, and somewhat coincides with the August leak.
APEX is an x86 instruction set extension that is designed to improve CPU execution efficiency. The most notable change here is the doubling of the number of general-purpose registers from 16 to 32 in 64-bit mode. Due to more registers, the need to move data between registers and memory is reduced, which, as a result, causes fewer unnecessary memory accesses. Games could therefore benefit from these changes, although the actual gains will depend on software optimizations and compiler support.
According to the leaker, the APX could contribute about 15% higher performance, and from August's leak, we learned that the 28-core configurations could deliver a solid 16% higher gaming performance vs. Core Ultra 9 285K when the CPU operates at 285W PL1. At 296W PL1, the gaming performance supposedly sees a 33% boost, which is a significant change, but Nova Lake is also going to feature 8000 MT/s DDR5 support out of the box, which should be a major factor in higher performance.
Intel needs this if it really wants to compete against AMD's X3D processors, which have been dominating the gaming workloads for a while now. Arrow Lake didn't bring any noticeable gaming benefits over Raptor Lake Refresh, but if Intel can manage to bring 20-30% higher gaming performance with Nova Lake, it could shake AMD's CPU share in the mainstream market.
At the same time, it's equally important to price the products right. A 28-core bLLC variant will likely end up in the premium segment, but if Intel prices it aggressively, as it does with the Arrow Lake Refresh, Nova Lake can be a true competitor to AMD's X3D chips.
