NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) earns high margins because customers want its systems and suppliers can deliver them. The investment risk sits between those two conditions. Securing more manufacturing capacity supports future sales, but it also increases the cost of being wrong about how quickly customers can deploy and pay for new systems. At September 30's $228.38 close, NVIDIA's equity was worth about $5.51 trillion. Its second-quarter filing disclosed $279 billion of supply and capacity commitments, up from $119 billion at the previous quarter-end. The increase is large enough to deserve a balance-sheet analysis, rather than another argument about whether demand for AI exists. A customer-spending slowdown would affect competing chip suppliers differently. Our comparison of the price investors pay for NVIDIA's growth versus its challenger's weighs the alternative in AMD. Commitments are a schedule, not one immediate bill The filing allocated $92 billion of these commitments to the remainder of fiscal 2027, $87 billion to fiscal 2028 and $88 billion to fiscal 2029, with smaller amounts afterward. NVIDIA also said it may cancel, reschedule or adjust some agreements before firm orders, although changes can carry costs. Calling all $279 billion an irrevocable cash liability would overstate the disclosure. The real exposure is the relationship between this spending schedule and customer demand. If orders stay strong, reserved capacity removes bottlenecks and supports sales. If deployment slows, NVIDIA may have to carry more components, change supplier orders or accept provisions against products it cannot sell at expected prices. Contract flexibility moderates that risk; it does not make forecasting free. NVIDIA also disclosed August guarantees capped at $105 billion for an OpenAI-related SB Energy buildout. They generally begin as the relevant leases commence, with the first construction phase expected in fiscal 2029, and payments depend on specified tenant defaults. The guarantees cover defined lease and power payments and decline over the leases; they are contingent exposure, not a current $105 billion cash bill. They nevertheless connect NVIDIA to customer credit risk as well as demand risk. Inventory already rose to $31.58 billion from $21.40 billion at the fiscal year-end, while accounts receivable increased to $63.06 billion from $38.47 billion. Those balances can reflect a larger business. They also mean cash realization deserves attention alongside reported revenue. Some investment-grade customers have payment terms from 90 days to one year, so growth in sales and growth in available cash need not move together every quarter.
