Is Micron Still The Business You Bought?
Investors who own Micron Technology (MU) likely bought into a memory chip maker whose sales and profits rise and fall with the broader chip cycle. The company released its fiscal Q4 2026 report on September 30, 2026, completing a full year of new results that provide enough data to test this long-held thesis. So, is the company you hold still that chip maker?
Partly: Micron’s Results Now Look Nothing Like Its Past
The answer is partly. Micron still manufactures memory chips, but its financial performance over the last twelve months looks nothing like the preceding 14 years. Revenue rose 256.3% over the last twelve months, offering a stark contrast to the typical growth rate of 14.1% seen in those earlier years. Its gross margin, the share of sales left after accounting for the cost of making the chips, stood at 80.7% over the last twelve months. That figure compares to a historical typical margin of 32.0%.
The company also operates with far less debt for its size. In its latest accounts, debt equals 2.6% of total assets, well below a typical historical level of 21.0%. Micron has not reported all three metrics at these levels simultaneously in any of the 14 years prior. For shareholders, each of these developments is good news.
Why Micron Now Earns So Much More On Memory
According to management, Micron earns more because demand for memory is currently running ahead of supply. Executives noted during the fiscal Q4 2026 call that AI agent tasks running on CPUs, a computer’s main processors, serve as a big driver of that demand.
On the supply side, management identified clean room space as the primary limit on how much memory the industry can manufacture. They added that high-bandwidth memory holds back supply too. This specific type of memory, which is utilized heavily in AI systems, is growing faster than ordinary memory, and newer versions are more complex to produce.
Within at least one operating segment, Micron’s products may have changed less than its prices. The mobile and client business unit actually shipped fewer bits of memory in fiscal Q4 2026 than it did in the prior quarter. Yet that unit’s revenue grew. Management credited higher pricing and a better product mix for the result, which suggests the segment is growing its revenue through those factors rather than through selling more memory.
What You Get From Micron’s New Profits
Micron produced $59.0 billion of free cash flow over the last twelve months, representing the cash left over after paying for its plants and equipment. At the end of fiscal Q4 2026, the company held $38.3 billion more in cash than in debt. In the twelve months to October 13, 2026, Micron stock returned 425%, against 21% for the S&P 500.
Little of that free cash flow has been returned to investors so far. Micron’s buybacks and its dividends each came to about 0.1% of its market value over the last twelve months.
The company cannot yet specify how long memory will remain scarce. Management expects the market to stay tight through 2028, but stated it has no line of sight to when supply and demand will ultimately balance.
Investors could once assume that Micron’s margins would stay modest and its debt would remain sizable through each chip cycle. You can no longer assume that, because Micron now earns far more on each sale and carries far less debt for its size. If Micron’s gross margin stays far above its old level, the underlying business you hold has changed. If it slips back toward that historical baseline, you still own the traditional chip maker you originally bought, caught at a high point in its cycle.
Does This Mean You Should Act On MU?
Our purpose is to inform you with unique data so you make the right investment decisions. That said, betting on a single stock is always risky, no matter which direction you choose.
There is a smarter approach. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has returned 105%, beating the benchmark that combines the three major indices – the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking. If that is how you want to invest, the HQ Portfolio is the place to start.
