Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan believes that the total addressable market for his firm's CPUs, when it comes to demand stemming from the AI agentic market, could surge to $200 billion over five years. The executive made the remarks during Intel's latest earnings call, where he reiterated the advantages of using CPUs in AI computing. Tan, whose firm also recently bought quantum computing firm Classiq, shared that the deal will enable Intel to become a "full stack revenue-generating" quantum computing company. Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan Touts Power Efficiency Advantages Of CPUs Over GPUs When It Comes To AI Computing Tan's remarks for CPUs and agentic AI come after the Intel CEO described how he uses the technology. In Late last month, the Intel CEO outlined that he uses agentic AI to do his "homework" by running the AI agents overnight and relying on their output in the morning. During Intel's third quarter earrings call, Tan continued to assert that the demand for CPUs in agentic AI computing will prove beneficial for Intel. Remarking that CPUs are more efficient, Tan shared that with energy efficiency being more important for the AI buildout, "deterministic CPU are far more efficient at doing tasks" when compared to GPUs being great at "thinking tasks." He added: "While GPU reasoning query run as high as multiple watt-hours of energy, a single CPU query could cost only joules of energy." The Intel CEO, not known for brashly expressing strong optimism, is nevertheless quite optimistic about the future of CPUs for agentic AI applications. He discussed the total addressable market and outlined: "Applying even conservative estimates to the total number of digital agents and agents served per CPU, it is easy to anticipate a massive dollar and unit TAM for CPUs over the coming five years. By our estimates, server CPU TAM, largely driven by agentic workloads, could increase as much as five times from where it is today, from $40 billion to more than $200 billion over five years. This makes the opportunity for Intel enormous." Tan also discussed Intel's recent acquisition of the quantum computing firm Classiq. The Intel CEO discussed Classiq in September, noting its position in the software sector of the quantum computing industry. Back then, Tan had remarked that the firm had clear visibility into market visibility as part of a broader set of remarks that had asserted that quantum computing's viability depended on market conditions. Classiq's integration of classical and quantum computing had also impressed the Intel executive. Naturally, with commercialization being paramount for Tan, in his latest remarks about Classiq, he praised the firm's "overarching hardware-agnostic software platform layer provides a gateway for more consumers to explore quantum computing." Tan has high hopes from the acquisition and even believes that it will allow Intel to become a revenue-generating quantum computing company: "It is a wonderful complement to our already strong internal quantum hardware and software stacks and enable us to further extend our compute platform offerings to include QPUs in addition to CPUs, GPUs, and ASICs. Post-acquisition, Intel will become a full stack revenue-generating quantum computing company." Follow Wccftech on Google to get more of our news coverage in your feeds.
