At the 26th China International Industry Fair in Shanghai, Langdao Silex, a Chinese technology startup, revealed its self-developed EUV light source prototype called the “FlintNano LPP-OXXO.” Being a core component of EUV lithography, the company states that it has secured most core components through independent R&D, with a localization rate of approximately 90%. Hearing this development could signal that China is ready to call it quits on ASML, but here’s why we wouldn’t jump to conclusions.
Mass production isn’t expected for the next 3-5 years, and that’s likely an optimistic timeline; ASML currently has U.S. trade restrictions to worry about more
Langdao Silex’s prototype employs laser-produced plasma (LPP) technology, which utilizes high-power lasers to generate plasma and produce EUV light. This is the same technical approach adopted by ASML and others. The technical specifications revealed by the company state that the driving laser output is 1,000W, with a repetition rate of 1–20kHz and conversion efficiency exceeding 2 percent.
EUV output is 15W or higher, with continuous operation capability of over 100 hours. Plasma size is 60μm, plasma stability is 3 percent RMS, and energy stability is approximately 5 percent. The startup’s representatives have mentioned that the current system is operating at a level suitable for wafer exposure testing. Unfortunately, when it comes down to mass production, which will be the actual test, it’s another ball game and a reason why ASML has little to sweat over.
Langdao Silex projects that 3-5 years are required before large-scale commercial production is viable, and that’s being a little too optimistic. We’ve reported in the past on how China has been working on EUV prototypes, with trial production happening as early as Q3 2025, ushering potential groundbreaking technologies while reducing reliance on companies like ASML and those influenced by the U.S. Sadly, China’s current DUV equipment cannot compete with the Dutch firm, meaning that the timeline mentioned by Langdao Silex could possibly be extended to 8-10 years, assuming everything progresses smoothly.
Beyond just the EUV light source prototype, completing EUV lithography equipment requires overcoming a mountain of challenges, ranging from ultra-precision optics, wafer stages, and complex system integration technologies. ASML’s own EUV machinery comprises hundreds of thousands of components sourced from more than 800 partner companies, so while an EUV light source is a signal that China’s heading in the right direction, it’s nowhere close to replacing ASML.
In fact, ASML’s biggest problem isn’t even China accelerating its development efforts towards in-house equipment; it’s whether the U.S. will place more restrictions on the region for DUV paraphernalia, cutting off a massive revenue stream that accounts for 20 percent of ASML’s annual sales. Limiting China’s options could fuel it with the desire to jumpstart those efforts, but Zeiss CEO believes it’ll take the country 15 years to reach that goal.
