Is There A Risk Hiding In AMD Stock’s Big Run?
For investors holding Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), the pressing concern is how much of each sale actually translates into profit. AMD’s operating margin, the share of sales left after all running costs, stood at 17.3% in the quarter to June 2026. Shareholders currently pay 22.6 times sales for AMD stock, compared with 3.1 times for the S&P 500. At that valuation, the margin matters immensely. So has that margin been climbing steadily?
Is AMD’s Profit On Each Sale Rising Steadily?
The trajectory is not steady, although the margin shows a large jump from a year earlier. In the quarter to June 2025, AMD posted an operating loss equal to 1.7% of its sales. AMD has said that quarter carried about $800 million of inventory and related charges, tied to U.S. export limits on its MI308 chip shipments to China.
Much of the recent jump looks like the company climbing out of a single weak quarter. That quarter to June 2025 marked its only operating loss in the last five quarters. Following that deficit, the margin has fluctuated, hitting a low of 13.7% in the quarter to September 2025.
Since the end of June, AMD has agreed to acquire Taalas, a startup producing chips for inference. The company has also agreed to buy the AI lab World Labs in an all-stock transaction. Neither deal appears in the margin yet. How each acquisition will ultimately affect the margin is not known.
After Running Costs, AMD Lags The S&P 500
Over the twelve months to June 2026, AMD recorded an operating margin of 15.7%, compared with 18.5% for the S&P 500 taken as a single entity. The gap between the two is mild. Over its last three twelve-month periods, AMD saw its sales grow an average of 24.4% a year, against 5.9% for the S&P 500. The company expands much faster than the overall market, yet it converts slightly less of each sale into operating profit.
When measured across full twelve-month intervals, however, AMD shows a rising margin. The metric stood at 3.7% for the period from July 2023 to June 2024. It then increased to 8.3% for the next twelve months, a span that includes the loss quarter. In the twelve months since that timeframe, the margin has climbed once more.
How Hard Has AMD Stock Fallen In Past Sell-Offs?
The stock has dropped harder than the S&P 500 in each of the five market shocks since 2022. The deepest of these declines occurred during the 2022 inflation shock. In that event, AMD stock fell 63% while the S&P 500 ETF dropped 24%. During the 2025 tariff shock, the stock fell 32% against a 19% drop for the index.
Shares are now coming off a far stronger year than the broader market. AMD stock returned 163.8% over the twelve months to October 14, 2026, easily outpacing the 17.3% gain for the S&P 500. Following a run of that magnitude, the current share price likely assumes the company can keep improving its margin.
Investors have reason to be moderately worried. The operating margin is indeed rising, but buyers pay a steep premium for each dollar of AMD’s sales compared with the broader market. For that risk to make financial sense, AMD must continue lifting its margin as its sales grow. AMD’s operating margin is the number to watch in its next report, expected on or around November 3, 2026.
How To Act On AMD?
Now you know AMD better. And that’s our purpose: to make you informed before you invest your money. However, making a bet on a single stock carries its own risks.
There is a smarter choice. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has beaten the benchmark that combines the three major indices – the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking.
If you’d rather act on AMD itself:
