What Is Next For Micron Stock?
Shares of Micron Technology (MU) have returned 415% over the past twelve months, easily outpacing the 17.3% return for the S&P 500. Yet the stock trades at just 13.2 times earnings, well below the 21.9 multiple of the broader index. Buyers appear unsure that profits made during a memory shortage will last, and the company has been working on exactly that problem. So what is Micron doing to make those profits last?
Micron Has Long-Term Agreements For Its Memory
Micron has secured long-term agreements covering both DRAM and NAND memory chips through 2030. Executives used their September 30 call to discuss extending these commitments beyond 2030.
A question during that September 30 call indicated the company holds 26 of these agreements, including ten signed in fiscal Q4 2026.
These contracts depart from standard orders by altering how the memory is priced. Management noted that about three quarters of the revenue under these deals relies on a defined pricing framework, with most of those frameworks setting a floor and a ceiling.
Agreements Could Cover A Third Of 2030 Sales
A question during the fiscal Q4 2026 call described the agreements as covering 35% of Micron’s sales by 2030. Management did not dispute the figure, saying the DRAM share is a little under 35% and the NAND share a little above it. Reaching that threshold would mark a structural shift for a business whose results have historically swung widely.
The company posted an operating margin of 74.6% over the past twelve months, yet three years ago its operations ran at a loss of 35% of sales. Top-line results have fluctuated just as violently, with fiscal Q4 2026 revenue climbing 379.3% from a year earlier.
Applying a price floor to a subset of sales would not eliminate swings like those, but it could limit them. The agreements also fall short of an absolute guarantee, as about a quarter of their revenue remains open to periodic negotiation or moves with market prices.
The stock does not appear to reflect steadier profits yet. Despite the twelve-month gain, Micron shares sit 18.5% below their 52-week high. They returned 0.6% over the past three months, trailing the 3.8% return for the S&P 500.
First Idaho Output Is Due In Mid-2027
Micron expects its Idaho facility to yield its first output in mid-2027, while a new clean room is scheduled to come online in the second half of 2028. More supply is exactly what worries investors. Barron’s wrote on October 6 that Micron stock is cheap because investors are wary of what happens when memory-chip production increases.
Management holds a contrasting view. Executives expect the memory market to stay tight through 2028, noting they cannot yet pinpoint when supply and demand will balance.
Management said pricing in the negotiations has been heading higher. The company has not, however, provided an exact split of the agreements between DRAM and NAND, nor has it disclosed which customers signed them.
The initial output from Idaho stands as the next dated supply event. Until then, the number of long-term agreements Micron signs is the key measure to watch in each quarterly report.
Does This Mean You Should Act On MU?
Our purpose is to inform you with unique data so you make the right investment decisions. That said, betting on a single stock is always risky, no matter which direction you choose.
There is a smarter approach. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has returned 105%, beating the benchmark that combines the three major indices – the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking. If that is how you want to invest, the HQ Portfolio is the place to start.
