An unusual experiment reportedly saved this user's laptop as the CPU thermal throttled with the default liquid metal.
User Replaces Liquid Metal with Graphene Sheet on Intel Core Ultra 9 285H, Improves Performance by 35% and Drops Temperatures Significantly
While most vendors are now using liquid metal for cooling laptop's CPU, there is always a risk of it leaking outside of the CPU, which can eventually damage other parts. Liquid metal is highly thermally conductive, but poses the risk of damaging other components due to spills. This user, however, took a different route to cool his CPU, which was thermal throttling badly even at a low power consumption.
Redditor u/kiodrag says that his Intel Core Ultra 9 285H processor was constantly hitting 105°C with the stock liquid metal cooling, thermal throttling it even at 35W. Under heavy loads, the CPU couldn't maintain low temperatures and could only deliver 3,431 points in Cinebench 2026. This CPU was, of course, at risk of degradation, apart from performing worse.
Therefore, the user decided to replace the liquid metal with a graphene sheet, which is another highly conductive substance, which has a few advantages over the liquid metal. One of the greatest advantages of the graphene sheet is that it cannot flow into other sections, which reduces the risk of electrical damage. By following a YouTube tutorial, the user not only replaced the liquid metal but also applied Thermal Grizzly putty to various components.
After a long process of removing the residue from the CPU, he cut the graphene sheet into a 25 x 25 mm pad to ensure the silicon is fully covered. After cleaning out the dust and assembling it, he tested the laptop again and found surprising results. The user says his CPU never exceeded 100°C after replacing the liquid metal, and as you can see from the screenshot, the average CPU temperature dropped by around 10°C.
The CPU was now constantly drawing 85W of power under load without thermal throttling, helping it to deliver higher scores than ever. When tested in Cinebench 2026 again, the CPU scored a good 4,634 points, which is nearly 35% higher than it could previously.
