Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is special for at least one good reason: it's the first time in the highly popular first-person shooter franchise to hit a Nintendo console in 13 years. Competitive military shooters aren't really big on Nintendo's platforms, after all, as their fans tend to prefer other types of games. Still, from Activision's perspective, luring more players to the IP can't be a bad thing, even though the impetus actually came from Microsoft.
As you'll probably remember, in 2023 Microsoft was trying to get regulators to approve its acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Part of their strategy was to confirm that Call of Duty would remain multiplatform, and they even went so far as to sign a binding deal with Nintendo to bring the game back to its consoles.
One of the big questions has been whether the weaker Nintendo systems could run the game well. Of course, the Switch 2 is far more capable than its predecessor; still, the early hands-on impressions from August were not positive at all.
Luckily, things appear to have improved, at least based on the review event impressions shared by Nintendo Life. Author Gavin Lane reported that the game seemed to run at a fairly solid 30 frames per second target, and overall, it looked like a proper, full-fledged port from developer Digital Legends. Even more interestingly, the author included a quote from Digital Foundry's Tom Morgan to explain the two upscaling options available to users: Filmic SMAA and NVIDIA DLSS.
On Switch 2, the Nvidia DLSS option appears to be interpreting the same pixel data — the same resolution — as the Filmic SMAA option, but it has two advantages. First, Nvidia's approach has better edge treatment that smooths out stair-stepping by more intelligently reconstructing that detail from accumulated frame data. Expect cleaner lines, essentially, once the frame settles.
And secondly, there's the handling of busier, less uniform detail like textures, where that technique is able to sharpen their definition. Door decals and foliage both benefit as a result. There are a few questions still to answer, of course. The fact that there's an option on Switch 2 at all strongly suggests the developer sees a trade-off between the options. Perhaps there's a frame-rate hit incurred by using DLSS, or perhaps certain artefacts appear when combining Switch 2's variant of DLSS with the IW Engine. We'll have to see the final build in full motion — rather than static shots — to get a proper grasp of the pros and cons, but the DLSS results look very positive already.
It's entirely unsurprising to us that NVIDIA DLSS would prove superior, even if the Switch 2 is only capable of a lite version of NVIDIA's machine learning model.
Still, we'll have to wait for a full technical analysis to discover whether this version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 really is a success. Meanwhile, it's worth noting that the game supports cross-play and cross-progression with all other platforms.
