The Tesla V100 has found itself a new purpose during the AI boom, meaning that NVIDIA's older GPUs are also being treated with the same value as token consumption from running LLMs continues to rise. According to the latest data, four graphics processors, the A100, H100, H200, and the RTX PRO 6000, have seen a rise in rental prices by up to 143 percent compared to the start of 2026.
Despite GPU rental prices increasing, not all NVIDIA's graphics chip premiums were the same; only the H200 witnessed the biggest disparity
The statistics monitored by Ornn Data were reported by a16z, and as of January 1, 2026, the H200 that launched in 2024 witnessed the biggest rental increase, witnessing a 143 percent increase. As for the B200, it gained a 111 percent rental rate, with the RTX 6000 PRO reaching 73 percent and H100 topping 54 percent, with the A100 sporting the smallest increase at a measly 9 percent.
Timing is also an important metric here because the majority of GPUs bottomed in the first quarter, with the H100 and B200 falling roughly 23 percent below their January level, then rebounded in April and May. The H100 was also flat until early May before making a solid jump within weeks. The H200 spiked late May, gave back about a quarter within weeks, then resumed climbing into October.
Given that AI token consumption rose sharply in spring, the charts clearly show the upward trend. However, even with the numbers displayed, there are a few caveats, starting with what exactly is behind the demand surge. Sure, the data mentions AI token consumption, but doesn't state the source, like agentic workloads or enterprise adoption.
The charts also don't mention anything about supply, data center capacity, and power constraints influencing these rental values. However, what we will agree on is how even older GPUs are finding their place in the market as they are strong contenders for running medium-sized LLMs, despite nearing their 10-year anniversary. Take the Tesla V100, for example.
With an NVLink board, four of these can hammer chips like the M5 Ultra and DGX Spark by up to a whopping 230 percent, which is why their popularity surge also means that higher VRAM variants are starting to be sold at a $200 premium. However, the Tesla V100's value proposition is why it's being preferred by consumers rather than enterprises, so while we'd appreciate a detailed breakdown as to what's causing rental price spikes, various forms of AI demand are ensuring that these GPUs are becoming appreciating assets.
