The introduction of in-house Oryon cores was the breakthrough Qualcomm needed to finally tap into the PC market, take on Apple Silicon, and become a threat to the x86 platform. Unfortunately, while efficiency continues to be a strong attribute for both the Snapdragon X Elite and Snapdragon X2 Elite, these SoCs are getting more expensive while competitors are developing processors that are just as capable. In short, Qualcomm’s advantages appear to be dwindling, with advanced manufacturing processes said to be the biggest driver for this price bump.
Expansion from mobile SoCs to other segments forced Qualcomm to rely on advanced nodes, driving up chipset costs
The price increases for the Snapdragon X and Snapdragon X2 were initiated on October 1, according to Economic Daily News, as Qualcomm has ventured into other categories besides mobile silicon to remain diversified and keep the San Diego firm shielded from the aftermath of the DRAM shortage, which has adversely affected its revenue for the year Though Qualcomm’s handset business remains its biggest earner, its foray into the PC market, edge computing, and other markets means it has had to rely on advanced lithography to gain an advantage.
The company has also targeted higher CPU clock speeds, with improvements incorporated into the GPU and NPU, which would have compromised the chipset’s efficiency if Qualcomm had stuck to an older manufacturing process, which further drove the price per unit. Unlike Apple, which continued to focus on architectural improvements while keeping the die size small to reduce manufacturing costs, Qualcomm also switched to TSMC’s slightly improved 2nm “N2P” node to obtain an edge over the A20 Pro, but at a literal cost.
Clearly, this strategy was rewarding Qualcomm for a time, but, as the latest price increase suggests, the approach wasn’t sustainable, especially given that the company prioritized TSMC’s newer processes over architectural efficiencies. The report also mentions that AMD will follow suit when it comes to price increases, with Intel also said to have raised prices for its Panther Lake CPUs. With the competition also raising prices, wouldn’t that mean Qualcomm is on a level playing field?
Not quite, because the x86 platform, with its decades-long relevance and app support, continues to be pivotal to the CPU industry. As far as efficiency goes, Intel’s 18A node has already proven to be exceptional in delivering incredible runtimes in laptops. So, where does this leave Qualcomm? Probably between a rock and a hard place, and unless it decides to stop giving excess priority to advanced nodes and focus on CPU architectural overhauls, it may continue to lose market share.
