You Bought VOO to Own the S&P 500. On $500,000, One Chipmaker Is $40,400 of It
A single retirement account holding VOO may carry far more exposure to one chipmaker than its owner ever intended, and the fund's own prospectus quietly warns about exactly this kind of concentration risk.
Picture a $500,000 retirement position in the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (NYSEARCA:VOO). As of August 31, 2026, NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA | NVDA Price Prediction) made up 8.08% of the fund. That puts $40,400 of your money in one semiconductor company. Would you have written a check that size to NVIDIA on purpose? For many VOO owners, the index simply made that call.
Your $500,000 Is More Lopsided Than It Looks
The concentration grows across the top ten. According to the Vanguard website, VOO’s ten largest holdings carried a combined 37.78% weight, as of August 31, 2026. On a $500,000 position, that is $188,900 sitting in ten lines. Every other company in the index shares the remaining $311,100. Vanguard’s prospectus counts 503 components in the target index as of December 31, 2025.
The top ten holdings belong to NVIDIA, Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), Alphabet, Broadcom, Meta Platforms, Micron Technology, and Tesla. Alphabet takes up two separate lines because it has two share classes.
These weights are several weeks old. They shift every trading day with share prices, so the exact holdings today will show different figures.
Why Nobody Chose This Weight
The S&P 500 weights companies by market value (share price times number of shares). A company’s slice of the fund tracks its size, with no judgment about how much any person should own. When a handful of companies grow significantly, the index follows them up automatically.
NVIDIA shows how fast that happens. Its market value stood at $5.536 trillion as of October 11, 2026. Its shares rose 1005.49% over the five years ended October 9, 2026, while VOO rose 90.68%. In its August 26 earnings report, NVIDIA posted quarterly revenue of $96.22B, up 105.85% year over year. Size weighting converted that growth into a bigger share of your account.
Size also brings swings. NVIDIA carries a beta (sensitivity to market moves) of 2.216. In the week ended October 9, 2026, its stock fell 2% while VOO rose 1.14%. A 2% drop on a $40,400 slice equals approximately $808.
Vanguard Prints the Warning Itself
The fund’s prospectus, dated April 28, 2026, says that by tracking its index, the fund could become nondiversified. It adds: “The performance of nondiversified funds may be negatively impacted by relatively few securities or even a single security.” The same prospectus carries a specific information technology sector risk disclosure, noting that technology stocks made up a significant portion of the index as of the most recent fiscal year end.
Vanguard’s 0.03% Fee Hides a Bigger Number
Vanguard lists VOO’s total annual fund operating expenses at 0.03%. That works out to $3 a year per $10,000 invested, or $150 on the full $500,000. That ranks among the lowest fees for S&P index funds.
Concentration is the larger cost, and it never appears in an expense ratio. That single 2% weekly dip in the NVIDIA slice cost about five years of VOO fees on the entire position.
Equal-weight S&P 500 funds give each company the same slice, which reduces any one name’s share. That said, they carry their own costs: higher expense ratios, more frequent rebalancing, and a lag whenever the largest companies lead.
Cap Weighting Works as Designed
Under cap weighting, VOO returned 329.72% over the ten years ended October 9, 2026, paying long-term holders. Those who understand the concentration and accept it are making a legitimate choice. The failure lies only in not knowing.
Check Your Overlap Before Your Next Rebalance
If you also own NVIDIA shares directly, or hold a technology fund alongside VOO, your real exposure to one chipmaker could run well above 8.08%. Open the portfolio or holdings section of VOO’s fund page on Vanguard’s website, where holdings and their weights are listed. Repeat for every fund you own, then add any NVIDIA shares held directly. A portfolio X-ray tool at your broker or Morningstar combines the overlap in one view.
In my view, for a VOO-only investor, the fund remains what it was, though it is less equally spread than many owners assume. For anyone combining VOO with NVIDIA stock or a tech fund, the overlap total deserves a number before the next rebalance. If you would never put $40,400 into one stock on purpose, how much do you hold by accident?
