Memory giant Micron is expected to continue to experience memory shortages until calendar year 2029, says a fresh report from investment bank Barclays. The bank's data outlines that DDR5 memory spot prices jumped by 8% on a monthly basis in October, with new customer agreements tracking market dynamics instead of previous floor and ceiling prices. Barclays coverage follows Citi, whose report projects that the DRAM shortage is going to peak in the fourth quarter of 2027 before slightly easing in the coming months.
DDR5 Spot Prices Jumped By 8% On A Monthly Basis In October, Shows Data From Investment Bank Barclays
Barclays data shows that memory prices continue their strong trend in 2026. The bank outlines that DDR5 spot prices jumped by 8% month-over-month in October. The data covers contract and spot prices for DDR4 and DDR5 memory chips. With the ongoing memory shortage looking to have injected predictability in the memory chip business courtesy of long-term agreements, Barclays outlines that memory supply agreements are now more reflective of market pricing trends instead of showing price floors and ceilings.
Even though DDR5 memory chips are the latest technology, prices for the DDR4 chips accelerated more sharply in the three months ending in October, according to today's data. The data covers contract and spot prices for both categories, and the accompanying report also comments on the ongoing trend of specification reduction (de-speccing) by chip designers to manage the shortage.
Starting from the DDR4 memory chips, contract prices jumped by 4% monthly and 24% on a three month basis in October, while DDR5 prices jumped by 3% and 20% during the same period. Barclays adds that the customer de-speccing is merely a temporary fix put in place to manage the short chip supply, but warns that a long-term trend for this strategy deserves to be watched.
De-speccing came into the spotlight recently after Tesla's Elon Musk first shared that Tesla had halved the memory capacity of its AI5 chips but later bumped it to 96GB to prevent them from being the ones with the lowest memory capacity.
Barclays' data and the resulting conclusions are backed by a separate analysis from Citi. Citi reveals that a deficit will persist in the DRAM and NAND markets as far ahead as until 2028. Citi's supply-demand (S/D) ratio, which measures the percentage through which demand exceeds supply, peaks at 13.9% for DRAM in the fourth quarter of 2027 and at 8.3% for NAND chips in Q1 2028. The reliance of AI-centered high bandwidth memory (HBM) chips on DRAM chips has led to manufacturers focusing on DRAM instead of NAND to create tightness in yet another market.
