An unreleased AMD engineering sample just surfaced online, which reportedly features 6 cores, 12 threads, and 24 GB LPDDR5 memory.
Zen 6-Based 6-Core/12-Thread APU appears on OpenBenchmarking; Runs at 2.4 GHz and Could Likely End Up in Next-Gen Steam Deck
A mysterious AMD APU has surfaced in benchmark results, hinting at a possible next-gen SoC for upcoming gaming handhelds. This early engineering sample supposedly belongs to AMD's rumored Gainsborough family and packs 6 cores and 12 threads alongside 24 GB of LPDDR5 memory. This is one of the first benchmark leaks of Zen 6-based chips, even though we have been seeing a lot of mentions of the upcoming Zen family.
According to a listing on OpenBenchmarking, the processor carries the part number "100-000001930-12_Y" and was tested on an AMD GBR-FF6-SKT validation platform. The listing reveals that the processor was running at 2.4 GHz and its memory configuration incorporated 4x 6 GB SK Hynix memory modules, resulting in 24 GB total memory capacity, running at a staggering 9600 MT/s.
These numbers show a substantial upgrade over the current Steam Deck configuration, which uses a custom AMD APU based on the Zen 2 architecture. Valve's handheld features only four CPU cores and eight threads, paired with 16 GB of LPDDR5 memory clocked at 6400 MT/s. So, the new chip is a significant upgrade, which could bring a substantial performance boost in gaming.
Its reported CPU microcode revision corresponds to the AMD Family 1Ah, model DCh, which has been associated with the Zen 6 microarchitecture. However, it remains unclear whether the chip uses the standard Zen 6 cores or the Zen 6c or the new Low-Power core design. As far as performance is concerned, the GpuTest benchmarks were conducted on Ubuntu 24.04 at 1024 x 768 resolution, and the sample scored 3,871 points in GiMark, 3,508 in FurMark, and 9,319 points in TessMark.
These benchmarks don't tell us the whole story, but it's still great to see the upcoming chip in action. We couldn't know much about this chip, such as the power limits, cooling solution used, and the iGPU configuration. However, it should be a drastic upgrade for the next-gen Steam Deck.
