Elon Musk initially tried to buy manufacturing facilities from Intel, TSMC and Micron before embarking on his ambitious Terafab project, says a fresh report from the Korean media. The report, courtesy of The Elec, covers the different suppliers Terafab has been working with and adds that the speed of execution at the project has left many suppliers surprised. Through Terafab, industry observers expect an initial production of 100,000 wafers per month before 2030 before scaling up to Musk's ambitious goal of a million wafers a month. Terafab Suppliers Left Surprised By Speed Of Execution As Engineers Given Decision Making Authority Musk's Terafab, through which he aims to produce a whopping 1 million wafers per month eventually, is a source of considerable debate. Earlier this month, reports surfaced that the executive was in talks with Taiwan's TSMC for a partnership. Soon afterward, Musk clarified that the maximum role that TSMC could play in the project would be that of a subcontractor. Similarly, TSMC's CEO, Dr. C.C. Wei, remarked during the firm's latest earnings call that his firm was in discussions with Musk but asserted that it must run the plants in order for a partnership to work. While Musk has grand plans for the chip facility, with the initial output of Terafab expected to be 100,000 wafers per month, it would barely make a dent in the global chip manufacturing industry. Compared to TSMC, the Taiwanese chip giant in particular is expected to manufacture 120,000 wafers of its leading-edge 2-nanometer manufacturing technology by 2026 end. Now, a report from The Elec claims that Terafab has already entered into discussions with Korean suppliers. The list of companies also includes American firms Lam Research and Applied Materials, and overall Terafab is working with firms that provide piping, polishing slurries, cleaning chemicals and other materials involved in the semiconductor supply chain. Crucially, the report also adds that building Terafab from the ground up was not Musk's initial plan. Instead, the SpaceX and Tesla CEO had first considered buying facilities from Micron, intel and TSMC. However, after he was "turned down" he shifted toward partnerships. Intel has directly partnered with Terafab and will work with the Musk project through its 14A manufacturing technology. Robots In Space Can Create An Economy "Million Times" Bigger Than Earth's Economy, Says Musk Terafab is part of Musk's plan to build enough chips for his autonomous vehicles, humanoid robots and other endeavors. These projects, in turn, factor into the executive's plans of expanding the economy beyond Earth. In a podcast with Walter Isaacson recorded in August, the executive explained his plans. Responding to a question about whether physical AI would be more valuable than virtual AI, Musk remarks that "the value of intelligence becomes exponentially greater. Because it can now do things. It can have a science lab and run experiments." In economic terms, Musk believes that "digital super intelligence probably improves the output of goods and services by 20 to 30%, something like that. So call it like maybe a 30% increase in the economy of Earth. It's still significant. It's like $30 trillion dollars a year, incremental." However, with robots that allow you to "get to space" and "do a mass driver on the Moon, then you can get to, I think potentially, a million times of the size of the Earth economy," he said.
