AMD has announced a massive expansion of its machine-learning-based FSR Upscaling 4.1 technology, bringing the upscaler to Radeon RX 6000 Series GPUs, Ryzen APUs, as well as gaming handhelds. The announcement also includes further improvements to FSR Frame Generation, expanded Ray Regeneration support, and upcoming Vulkan compatibility.
In a post on X, Jack Huynh, AMD's Senior Vice President and General Manager of Computing and Graphics, outlined the company's plans to make its latest upscaling technology available to significantly more gamers, accompanied by an official six-minute presentation.
Perhaps the biggest announcement for PC gamers is that FSR 4.1 Upscaling is finally coming to RDNA 2-based Radeon RX 6000 Series GPUs, extending support beyond the previously supported RX 7000 and RX 9000 families. AMD says it has specifically optimized the model and execution path for the entire lineup, ranging from the flagship RX 6900 series down to entry-level RX 6400-class hardware.
The company demonstrated FSR 4.1 on an RX 6800 XT, highlighting improved image clarity and optimizations for 4K gaming. This is particularly welcome news for owners of older Radeon GPUs, potentially extending their useful gaming lifespan without requiring a hardware upgrade.
The expansion doesn't stop at discrete GPUs, either. FSR 4.1 is also making its debut on AMD APUs, including Strix Halo and Gorgon Halo-based Ryzen AI Max processors, Strix and Gorgon Ryzen 9 laptops, and gaming handhelds powered by Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, Ryzen Z2 Extreme, and Ryzen Z2 A processors.
To accommodate the more restrictive performance and power budgets of these devices, AMD has developed a new, highly efficient machine-learning model that is less than half the size of its previous FSR 4.1 Upscaling model. According to AMD, the optimized implementation delivers superior image quality to FSR 3.1 Upscaling at higher-quality presets while maintaining frame rates above 60 FPS in its demonstrated scenarios.
Another major development is the arrival of FSR 4.1 Upscaling on ASUS ROG Xbox handhelds, with Microsoft confirming that the technology will also be available to developers on Xbox Series X and Series S consoles soon. AMD also highlighted its ongoing collaboration with Microsoft on Project Helix, which will leverage the upcoming FSR Diamond technology.
Finally, AMD confirmed that FSR Redstone is now supported in over 400 games on Radeon RX 9000 Series GPUs. The company is also working on improving FSR Frame Generation's frame pacing for smoother gameplay, expanding Ray Regeneration to additional titles, and introducing Vulkan support for FSR.
AMD hasn't provided specific rollout dates for every newly supported platform, but this represents one of the company's most ambitious FSR compatibility expansions yet, particularly for gamers still using older Radeon hardware.
