Chip stocks shrug off a scary morning, but history says the shakeout isn't over

다만 bulls(강세장 지지자들)는 위안거리를 얻는다.

Wall Street's AI darlings were in free fall at the open. By midmorning, they were leading the comeback.
The PHLX Semiconductor Index (^SOX) sank to its lowest level since early August early Tuesday. It was supposed to be the moment Monday's relief rally fell apart after an eight-session losing streak.
Instead, buyers stormed in. The index is now higher on the day and back above Friday's close, springing a bear trap much like the one forming in CoreWeave (CRWV).
The rebound is broad, too. Roughly 3 of every 4 stocks in a 60-stock Yahoo Finance chip basket have turned green, including heavyweights AMD (AMD), Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM), Intel (INTC), and Micron (MU). GlobalFoundries (GFS) tops the list.
Notice who's missing from the party. Chip-equipment makers Lam Research (LRCX), KLA (KLAC), and Applied Materials (AMAT) are still in the red, along with Arm (ARM). Even Nvidia (NVDA), the AI trade's bellwether, is barely keeping up.
Buyers are picking their spots, favoring the companies that make chips over the ones that sell them the tools.
History says the real test may still be ahead
The track record says don't count on the bottom being in just yet.
After every losing streak of seven sessions or more since 1994, the index traded below the streak's final close within a month, according to Yahoo Finance calculations. After the longest streaks, it was lower a month later most of the time.
And those dips weren't shallow. The typical one after the longest streaks ran about 9%. Tuesday's barely scratched 1% before buyers pounced.
One-day comebacks like this one haven't settled the question either. They've been a coin flip for chips.
The bulls do get a consolation prize. Three months out, the index was usually higher.
BofA Global Research called last week's rout as a "positioning-driven hiccup on the fringes of the AI trade," in a research report. If that's right, the bounce has room to run. If not, the next dip is the one to watch.
For the index, it starts with the summer floor around 11,000 to 11,140, built from lows in late July and September, plus Friday's close. Holding it keeps Tuesday's comeback intact.
Lose it, and the next stop is the 10,450 to 10,500 zone, where chips bottomed in late July and traded in late April.
On the upside, bulls first need to clear 12,600 to 12,700, which capped the index in early October. Above that sits the early-October peak zone near 13,200 to 13,350.
Watch whether Tuesday's low holds and that big 11,000 level just underneath. That's where the silicon meets the road.
