The starting multiple matters
At October 16 prices, AMD's $863.17 billion equity value compared with $8.40 billion of trailing operating cash after capital expenditure: roughly 103 times. TSMC's comparable cash figure was $45.53 billion. Applying its $412.61 depositary-share price to 25.93 billion ordinary shares, with five ordinary shares per depositary share, gives a U.S.-price-implied equity value near $2.14 trillion and a multiple near 47.
That depositary-share adjustment matters. Mixing ordinary shares with the U.S. trading price would inflate capitalization fivefold. Even correctly calculated multiples are historical snapshots: investment spending, working capital and currency translation can change the denominator.
AMD's growth opportunity is substantial. Second-quarter data-center revenue reached $6.72 billion, more than double a year earlier. Its challenge is turning broader adoption into cash after engineering and investment costs. Our Nvidia-AMD margin analysis tests how much room AMD currently has for pricing disappointment.
A common ending multiple exposes the hurdle
Suppose TSMC's cash flow grows 10% annually for ten years. At unchanged share prices and share counts, AMD would need about 19% annual growth to reach the same ending cash-flow multiple. The calculation compounds the starting multiple gap over ten years; it does not assume either stock actually delivers those returns.
If TSMC's cash growth is zero, AMD's catch-up hurdle is about 8% annually. If TSMC grows 15%, AMD needs about 24%. These are scenarios, not company guidance or justified growth forecasts. AMD could deserve a different ending multiple, and dilution would make the required company-wide growth higher for a given per-share result.
TSMC also has to earn its cash. New fabrication capacity can consume funds long before it produces revenue, while utilization and geographic disruption can undermine returns.
The investment test
Geography also changes the return investors may require.
Q2 2026 hedge-fund holders rose to 164 from 134 for AMD and to 249 from 234 for TSMC. Marshall Wace increased AMD shares 3%, while Fisher increased TSMC shares 2%. The aggregate increases do not imply every manager agreed. AMD's September 30 short interest was 2.42% of float.
