Our 10 Best Semiconductor Stocks to Buy for the Next Decade shows where Micron and Sandisk rank against other durable chip franchises using weighted hedge-fund sentiment, durability, financial resilience and valuation. Their capital-spending lines, however, conceal different funding burdens. Micron Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:MU) owns substantial manufacturing capacity. Sandisk Corporation (NASDAQ:SNDK) shares NAND manufacturing investment through joint ventures. A smaller direct factory bill does not mean expansion is almost free.

Follow the money beyond capital expenditure
Micron's fiscal year ended September 3 produced $89.675 billion of operating cash against $30.712 billion of property, plant and equipment purchases, leaving $58.963 billion. Its higher reported adjusted free cash flow includes government incentives, so the gross-spending calculation better isolates the investment burden before that support.
Sandisk's year ended July 3 generated $11.671 billion of operating cash and only $177 million of direct capital expenditure. But it also advanced $462 million to manufacturing ventures and received $187 million of loan repayments. Subtracting that $275 million net funding, alongside direct spending, leaves $11.219 billion.
The ventures also sell wafers to Sandisk. Those purchases already affect operating cash and must not be deducted again. The annual report describes obligations to fund roughly half of venture investment when internal resources are insufficient, and to bear half of fixed costs even when production falls. Partnership changes where the bill appears; it does not eliminate manufacturing exposure.
Customer cash can flatter the comparison
Sandisk's operating cash included increases of $1.374 billion in refund liabilities and $1.217 billion in contract liabilities. Removing those two contributions from the $11.219 billion residual leaves $8.628 billion. Sandisk reports $8.743 billion of adjusted free cash flow using a narrower $2.476 billion adjustment for its new business model's prepayments and deposits. Our broader liability adjustment is not normalized cash flow; taxes, inventories and other working capital are still of importance.
Micron classified $12.747 billion of customer contract deposits in financing cash flow. Those deposits therefore are not inside the operating-cash starting point and should not be subtracted from it again. Refundability still matters when assessing how much of Micron's cash can protect investors in a downturn.
